I purchased my first Mac about three weeks ago. I had always wanted a Mac, and I really sweated the details before I bought it. I loved it. My wife hated it. We returned it. So, I began looking for comparable Windows laptops.

What struck me first was how durable and heavy this Lenovo ThinkPad really felt. While considered an Ultrabook, at 4.2lbs the ThinkPad 14 is still a heavy machine. Albeit much lighter and thinner than its cheaper predecessors. Unlike much thinner Ultrabooks, you can pick the ThinkPad 14 up from the corner and it will not flex at all. As you are manipulating the screen to move in and out of tablet position, there is also very little screen flex (although, some).

Screen: The clarity and color were excellent with the monitor. Screen brightness is good, but not good enough to combat glare, especially in direct sunlight. At a full HD 1080p display resolution, the screen is vibrant and crisp. I never thought I would use a touch-screen with a laptop, but the touch feature and 360 degree movement has given the laptop an entirely new look, feel, and function for me. Although using the ThinkPad in tablet mode is somewhat cumbersome, the keyboard and track pad lock as to prevent accidental key clicks and the 360 degree movement has proven to be extremely useful to me.

Processing: The Intel Core i5-4210U is an ultra low voltage dual-core processor based on the Haswell architecture. Due to hyper-threading, the two cores can handle up to four threads, all while using less battery power. What this means for you is this machine can handle just about everything you throw at it and should give you a little "future proofing".

WiFi: I found the WiFi range to be sub-par.

This is a rare type of laptop that can do everything. It has a dedicated Nvidia graphics card (840M) so it can handle most games, yet it's not as heavy as most other gaming laptops (this one's only 4lbs). It has a touch screen with Yoga hinge and a backlit keyboard like higher end ultrabooks. I actually looked into higher end ultrabooks and still got this one. The higher end ones had smaller screens and/or features I didn't really want or need, like the super high resolution (3200) of the smaller Lenovo Thinkpad Yoga (that ends up shrinking things way too small). Another important thing for me is that the fan not be loud during normal usage (unlike Dells I tried), and this laptop is pretty quiet. I also prefer the 14 inch size when I'm doing a lot of work I don't have to hunch down or anything to see something.

This laptop can run Ubuntu (Linux) just fine, just disable Secure Boot in the BIOS to simplify things. One nice thing is that this laptop has a second M2 SSD drive (16gb). The way I have it set up is I installed Ubuntu on the SSD and kept Windows on the main 1TB drive, for games and extra storage. So it's like having two laptops in one - a Windows gaming/productivity machine, and a Linux-based, fast booting machine, sort of like a Chromebook. I bought a Transcend 256GB M2 42mm Sata SSD to upgrade the secondary SSD storage. You can also buy an SSD to replace the main drive if you wish. In Ubuntu, just install Bumblebee to handle the Nvidia dual graphics, and touchegg to support gestures on the touchscreen. Everything works great. In most other laptops I tried, the brightness control didn't work, or there was static noise, or the wireless had issues in Linux. This one's been perfect.

My one complaint is something that was surprising to me.

Pros
Built like a tank
Very accessible / up-gradable
Fast (after installing Samsung 850 evo)
Quiet
Lots of ports for an ultrabook

Cons
Laptop turns off if moved
Left corner squeaks a little bit

The other reviews did a good job of laying out many of the strengths of this laptop. Therefore, I'll just focus on one major flaw so that potential buyers are aware of it before they purchase and won't get stuck like I did. If you are using this laptop on battery and not plugged in it will turn off when moved. This can be just from lifting it off a desk, bumping into it or changing yoga modes. Sometimes it turns off very easily like 4 out of 4 times its moved. Other times less often. I can recreate it every time though.

In the Lenovo forums this is a well known issue and appears to affect most (if not all) of these models so far. Lenovo also may be removing unfavorable product reviews on their site that mention this issue. If I had known about this issue before I left the country to work overseas I would have returned the laptop.

I'll edit this post later and raise the rating if the international customer support located in Taiwan is able to quickly fix this issue.

Edit: Yep, they did manage to fix it after about a month in the shop. Customer service department was very helpful and friendly. I'm enjoying the laptop now that its fixed, did a clean install and upgraded the SSD - the original HDD was horrible for a $1,000 laptop.

This laptop remains hard to recommend unless one really wants the mid-range Nvidia graphics and ability to upgrade the SSD in an ultrabook. Otherwise, there are more interesting models out on the market now without the track record of quality control problems this one has. Many new models come with SDDs installed, have better battery life and are even at lower price points - e.g., HP Spectre x360, Asus UX 305 and the upcoming Asus T300 Chi.
