I was invited to review this product, probably because I have several reviews on home automation products. My wheelhouse is Z-Wave, which if you don't know, is a home automation protocol which creates a network among low wattage wi-fi devices, which can be in the form of light switches, door locks, motion sensors, thermostats, etc. Z-Wave requires a gateway controller and a moderate level of savvy and configuration.

This switch is completely stand alone and requires minimal configuration. You can have one of these, or 100 of them, not much changes in the way of configuration and overhead. These switches operate independently of each other. After spending a few days tinkering with this device, I must admit that I'm very impressed. Here are my experiences and observations:

Setup:
I plugged the unit into the wall and gave it a minute to start up. It's more than an AC outlet, this is a routing device which has an operating system that allows it to control the on/off state of the AC outlet, and monitor power usage. Furthermore, this device can function either as a wireless bridge or wireless repeater, I'll explain more on that.

After a minute, I looked for a wireless network named THA-101 - found it. The password is "password". My computer connected to the wireless network being offered by the Smart Switch. Then, I directed my browser to 192.168.10.100, which challenged me for user credentials (admin/admin), which were well documented on the packaging (along with wi-fi network/password info). Once inside the configuration page, I changed the admin password for security. The wi-fi configuration section is a bit ambiguous, but once you know how the device works, you can determine how you want it set up.

TRENDnet is general is a good company - I mean they have good intentions and good ideas. But they are still rather immature and irresponsible in execution. Example is this product: (1) the only way to control it from inside your network is by disconnecting your computer from everything and connecting to this device's internal server - this is rather impractical; (2) it means no matter what device you have - you just cannot turn this switch on or off as you would think you could or as advertised; (3) my local router does not see this device despite it being configured to get the IP assignment from this router. (4) you must have an Android telephone to have a chance to try to work it - but if you do not have cellular signal in the home this might be a futile exercise. (5) there is no way of changing the devices server IP address.
All this after the upgrade to the firmware 1.03. I think TRENDnet needs to make yet another firmware fix.
Trendnet's technical support is impossible to access without registration. There is no forum and no real FAQ.

I agree with Denis: this product does not seem to be solid at all. Especially after upgrading the firmware to ver. 1.03. I wonder how to go back to v. 1.02 as it is no longer available on the tech support web site. The User Guide also does not make it clear how to control the device with the Android App from outside of the home network's fire wall. I've set up several WiFi cameras where the app specifies what port to forward to from outside the home network and after making the corresponding port forwarding in the router, they all worked fine. The UG of this device says nothing about it, yet it claims that the apps can control power switches remotely. I could do this remotely, when I am lucky, only from inside my home network.

The browser management is pretty temperamental, too, especially after I try to change from Repeater Mode to Device Mode and vice-versa.
I did a hard reset on the device to restore it to factory setting to start all over, but eventually I got into instability again. A repeated reset did not fix the instability problem, either. It's too bad, because the whole concept behind this device is so promising!

Style Name: Smart Switch Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
This is a new-school update on a product I have used for many year. At one time I had my entire house wired with switches that used the AC power line to transmit signals from a central controller to each switch. I could set the lights to go on and off at a preset time, choosing to dim some of them to predetermined levels. I could have fans and other appliance switch on and off using the same controller. There were several companies who supported the same standard (which is still being sold today) and in fact I still use a few devices for hard-t0-reach lights and appliances.

Today not much has changed except now the units are controlled from a smartphone. How they function is very similar to the technology that was around in the 1980’s with the biggest difference that they use a WiFi signal rather than the AC power lines (which had some drawbacks in terms of all devices needing to be on the same circuit and occasional interference from wireless phones and other devices.

So, bottom line is, I like the concept TRENDnet has here and their price per switch isn’t that far off what the other technology used over 20 years ago.

TRENDnet adds a few new twists however. One is that you can monitor the current draw (power usage) of the item that’s plugged in to each switch. That’s kind of cool, EXCEPT logic says the items you most need to monitor are items that are too power-hungry for the capacity of these switches to handle or that you wouldn’t want to switch them remotely anyway … like TV’s, air conditioners, refrigerators, water heaters, etc.

Another twist by TRENDnet is that each switch monitors your home’s WiFi signal and “amplifies” it to help expand the reach to more problematic areas.
