I am in the process of reconfiguring my computer workstation area and I am using the Ikea IVAR shelf sys components. One of the issues I will have to deal with is modifying the length of the shelves. In some cases this will involve shortening the shelves while in others I will need longer lengths.

Originally my plan for the shorter shelves involved cutting out a section of the shelf and then joining the two ends together. As I was searching the web for IVAR parts I came across a solution provided by another IVAR user where he indicated he used l-shaped support brackets with predrilled holes. As he assembled the shelves he used screws to attach the shelves to the supports.

Over the past couple of months I have been looking for straight metal pins to use with my IVAR shelves. I initially ordered 1/4 x 1 1/2 inch pins but the diameter of the pins were slightly too big, so I went with 3/16 inch (5 mm) pins which fit.

Not know which support pin would work best I ordered both the 1/4 and 5 mm (3/16") pins. Once received the support pins I found the 1/4 inch pins worked best so I will save the 5 mm (3/16") pins for another project.

The support pins arrived a day sooner than the original date and I was pleased since I ordered them a few days before Christmas.

I really like the look of the pins, they are sturdy and nicely finished, and I like that there is a hole so you can screw the pin to the shelf so it doesn't slide. I recommend them to anybody that wants a quality product.

The color is more brass than bronze and the machine work is off. When you hold the old bracket that came with the cabinet and the new one together where they go into the cabinet hole they look the same, but the machining is off enough that I will have to drill the hole larger. I am sure the machining is done in a third world country where the work is not as precised. A few mills make a big difference.
