We just returned form using this at World Cup in Brazil as a repeater for wifi networks to give us better strength at our lodgings. This is one impressive unit that has worked immediately.

Setup was so simple. You have two choices. If you have access to the router itself (not likely in hotels) then simply press the WPS button on both the router and this device after you have plugged it in and powered it up. You then have an access point ready to go.

If you do not have access to the physical router then plug this device into the wall, connect to it directly via wifi via it's own web enabled interface and walk through the simple wizard to pick and authenticate with the wifi signal of your choosing.

We configured this to use our own SSID names so we always connected to it no matter where we were once it was set up for that hotel/location. (You can have it set to the same SSID for your home for simplicity, but we wanted the stronger signal everywhere we went.) While inside the hotel we actually moved this around with us to the dining area, pool are and more where normal hotel signal was weak. We just plugged it in, waited for it to connect to the hotel and we were back online.

What we gained was about 5 times better throughput on average across directly connecting to the hotel networks sitting in the same room. For example, we could sit at the room desk and get 2MB down from the hotel access point. We configure the D-Link to connect to the hotel and our device to the D-Link. Throughput jumped (remember we did not move anything) to 10MB. This was seen each and every time (the performance increase that is). Being geeks we tested this all the time.

Wow the reviews for this device are all over the board. I am guessing that some of the negative reviews are based on user error and/or strange configuration issues (e.g. Comcast routers that don't play nicely with non-Comcast supplied equipment, grrr) but there are a couple of themes I've noticed and am experiencing myself: slow speed - my internet speed is 50 Mbps as of this writing but the maximum I'm getting out of this extender is 12-15 mbps. That's actually fine for my purposes but some may not be happy with that. The other issue I've seen is that at times it seems to drop the signal and my devices have to reconnect to it (yes, I've updated to the latest firmware).

However, the major plus for this router is MAJOR RANGE POWER... I had not expected this frankly as I've had some issues with Dlink devices in the past and have switched the ASUS for the most part. But after plugging this in and setting it up (read the enclosed card, not the instruction manual for the correct address to browse to if you want to manually configure the device) this thing blasted signal all over my two-story house and even out in the yard and the neighbor's driveway. I have 2 routers and one repeater covering our house and none of them has decent range... hence all the routers. I don't know if this is some new technology or what but this is far stronger than all my other routers and repeaters combined.

I'll update this review as I use this device but so far if range is what you need, this might be worth looking into.

Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
UPDATE: While the set-up issue, described below, remains, I've raised the rating from ONE to THREE STARS, pending further review based on performance. Perhaps I was simply impatient. After giving up, the next day I noticed that the device, which I had left plugged in, was working - showing a steady green light. So I took my laptop outdoors and determined that the range had reliably increased by about 30 feet in radius.

ORIGINAL REVIEW: I really wanted to like this device, but the tech writing won't allow it. I'm intelligent, educated, computer savvy, - but after three attempts over two days I still can't get this puppy to work. BLAME whoever manages TECH WRITING of this product!

I did actually, finally, get a steady green light (and a green √ from the setup assistant) after my third attempt. So I unplugged the device from nearby my router and moved it to another outlet about forty feet away, where I wanted increased signal strength. This, according to instructions, was appropriate - but it wouldn't re-connect. So I gave up, utterly frustrated and defeated.

The tech writing department needs a healthy dose of "beginner's mind." And the graphic instructions, which were apparently totally new in late November, 2013, need a total remake. There is so much ambiguity, poor logic, visual disjunction, and bad flow, that the return rate for this product must be huge. The present effort was surely cobbled together by a committee at odds with itself. Perhaps what is needed is this: only ONE writer/designer, who then has to face a focus group of newbies (reasonably computer literate, but new to the product) with his/her setup instructions for corrections - and then revise and repeat with a new group, prior to release.
