[Following my review I list the contents of the set with the performer]

This collection of some of the finest performances in the Decca catalog from the monophonic era would ordinarily be self-recommending. Unfortunately, there are some Classical music listeners who have difficulty in hearing recordings in mono. In this age of surround sound that is perfectly understandable. Nevertheless, I recommend this collection for the general excellence of its performances, and for its exemplary monophonic sound that for the most part features a pleasing depth and a warm resonance from top to bottom. This Decca box set boasts surprisingly clear sound in its earliest recordings and maintains that excellence into the later years, which were just prior to the nascent stereo era.

The collection begins with some iconic 1940's recordings from Ernest Ansermet. The remastering is excellent: featuring nominal hiss, good dynamic range and exceptional clarity. In many ways, I prefer the sound of these recordings to those made early in the stereo era, which have always sounded slightly thin and harsh to my ears. Here the mono sound has a richness and assertiveness missing from the stereo recordings. However, it is in their performances that these recordings beg to be heard. Ansermet's 1949 Petrouchka (Decca's very first LP record) and Rite of Spring are urgent and dramatic with an intensity more appropriate for the opera stage than the ballet. Of course, Ansermet has serious claims to "authenticity" in his Stravinsky performances since he was there at their inception. His Roussel, Ravel, Dukas and Debussy are equally as good.Read more ›

This box is a real a delight, and one of the most satisfying collections I've purchased in some time. A variety of standard and not-so-standard repertoire in clear mono sound performed by some of the really great artists and conductors of the mono era, a time when Decca was in truly top form. I'd guess that much in this collection is new to CD since I don't have many of the recordings, so this box is special in that regard also (unlike some other boxes of merit that often contain many recordings that most collectors will already have). The thick booklet contains complete recording details, numerous pictures, and an general article on Decca's mono era, but no detailed notes on any particular piece of music. Each CD is in a card-stock sleeve with the original album cover on the front; very pleasantly nostalgic!

I hesitated at first, wondering how the mono would sound. Having listened to many of the recordings, I am now very happy I that I went ahead and bought the set. You soon forget that it is not stereo, and just listen to the performances, which are memorable. Even though mono sounds a little "narrower" than stereo, the Decca engineers worked around that brilliantly. What is lost in side to side expansion is made up for in the front to back depth of the sound -- it almost sounds 3-dimensional at times. Think about how great the Beatles mono set sounded -- different from stereo, but still riveting in its way, sometimes more so. I felt the same way listening to this. So glad I have it, and I thank Decca/Polygram for reissuing these great recordings and performances for all time.
