I prefer to carry my DSLR with additional lenses in a camera backpack. I currently use a LowePro Fastpack 200, and I'm able to squeeze in a 5D Mark III with a 24-105mm f/4L, a 50mm f/1.4, a 580EX flash, and a 70-200mm f/2.8 IS in the top compartment. That's a fairly heavy load to be carrying around, but it is fairly comfortable, and it leaves my hands free. With that backpack, it is very easy to take out the camera - slip off a shoulder strap, swing it in front, open side pocket, and remove camera.

There are two main disadvantage of the backpack. The bulk can be pretty awkward in crowded places, and everyone knows that you have photography equipment in there. It's harder to keep an eye on things when it is on your back.

This messenger bag doesn't look big, but to my surprise it fits that whole list of stuff mentioned above - apart from the 70-200mm lens - pretty comfortably. There's still some space left that will fit another small lens, or the camera's battery charger. There's also two pockets - one velcroed and one zippered - that will hold the usual spare batteries, memory cards, filters. There's also a slot in the side compartment that can fit a tablet. My 11" Acer Chromebook fits in there fairly comfortably as well.

All the camera gear fits into a pod that can be removed. If you want to use this for something other than photography gear, the insert comes out easily with all your gear securely held in it. Without the insert, you can fit a 13" or 14" laptop in there, though it is a tight fit with the 14".

There's a zipper to access the tablet sleeve without opening the flap. You can reach your tablet, wallet, purse, or whatever small item you store in there without showing everyone that you're carrying a camera in your messenger bag.

Small is a relative thing. I have several large camera bags for carrying around lots of equipment, but for those occasions when all you need is your DSLR, maybe one or two spare lenses, and a couple of data cards the Thule TCDM-100 is a nice solution.

The bag color (Dark Shadow) is an attractive and neutral two-tone charcoal gray. It's made of a heavy duty, water-resistant material. It has an interesting shape for a messenger bag; not your standard rectangle, the bag has an asymmetrical, slightly top heavy appearance, but there is no wasted space inside. There is a padded adjustable shoulder strap, as well as a fixed grab handle.

The interior of the bag has a built in pocket large enough to store a tablet. There is also a removable compartment (the bag-within-the-bag) featuring three flexible panels with Velcro fasteners that can be adjusted to configure it for up to four lens size storage slots - or, depending on the size of your lenses, the DSLR camera body and one or two lenses. This interior compartment has its own handles and can be removed and carried separately outside the messenger bag; it does not have its own cover or closure though.

In addition, they've made it easier to see what's inside the bag by making the inside of the interior compartment light gray with bright blue for the panels; the colors coordinate nicely with the rest of the bag.

The back exterior of the bag appears very plain, but features a placket which conceals a zipper granting access to the interior pocket without having to unsnap and open the lid. With the closure flap unfastened, you'll have access to two additional pockets on the front exterior. The first pocket is very flat and tight; it could be good for keeping additional data storage cards. The second pocket is larger and less constructed - possibly a good spot for extra batteries or a USB cord.

Color: Dark Shadow Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
I've got a very small camera bag (where *only* the camera fits) and a very large camera bag (where EVERYTHING fits but it's dang heavy) so I got this thinking it would be a nice middle ground between the two.

I'm able to fit my camera (Canon Rebel T3), an extra lens (the 18-55mm) and a speed light. All of this goes into the removable pod that, when lifted out, looks kind of like a tote bag. It's very cute! There's also a spot for a tablet. I have an Android ASUS Memo and even in its leather case, it easily slips right in.

There's a front zippered compartment and a velcro pouch which provides plenty of places for extra batteries, memory cards, cords and accessories. There's a zippered opening in the back that provides quick access to your gear. At first I thought this was a dumb feature, I mean, how hard is it to just use the front flap? But as practical use kicked in, I actually found myself using this a lot, and I liked it! Especially considering that the front buckles are a PAIN to get open. If you're in a hurry, those things are annoying as heck and so the back access becomes my preferred way. I also don't like how, because it is shaped, the front flap doesn't stay open very well. You have to use an arm or shoulder to prop it open while you get your stuff out.

The bag is very ruggedly built and seems like it will withstand a lot of abuse. There's plenty of padding and the origami organizers both separate and protect your gear. It's a little heavier than I would like and at this price point, I don't know if the extra cost is balanced out by the extra quality. But it does comes with a 25 year warranty and looks pretty attractive too.
