I made my own caramel in anticipation of this product. With top quality ingredients, I can make it cheaper. I spent an hour making it. I make mine pretty much as Werther does, except I get to choose lighter or darker within bounds. Mine tastes the same, except I can add some things near or at the end.

The heavy duty comes when I must wrap them for gifting. So I am pleased to recommend Werther's without reservation or qualification. They are real and true.

I've been a fan of Werther's for years and am glad that they came out with a soft caramel. It is easier on my jaws.

What can I tell you that anyone who has tried Wether's candies doesn't already know? Actually there are a couple of things. I've included a list of ingredients and allergy warnings in this review.

These soft caramels are crazy good.

While I have gotten quite hooked on Lancaster soft caramels now that there's a Werther's version I'll look to these as for the price they can't be beat.

Here's a list of ingredients:
Ingredients: Glucose Syrup (from wheat or corn), Sugar, Sweetened Condensed Skimmed Milk, Palm Oil, Sorbitol Syrup Humectant, Cream, Condensed Whey Powder, Salt, Cane Sugar Syrup, Soy Lecithin Emulsifier, Artificial Flavor

There is an allergy warning: Contains milk, soybeans, and wheat

If you aren't allergic to any of those things, these are safe for you aside from the fact that they are highly addictive.

I have a bag of Werther's Original Soft Caramels and a bag of Werther's Sugar Free Chewy Caramels. So I thought I'd compare the two.

Taste: Quite similar. But the original is a bit creamier and more full-bodied. While I like them both, I prefer the original variety.

Texture: Again similar, but the original is smoother where the sugar is more sticky and not as soft. The original wins again.

Serving size: I received one 4.41 oz (128g) bag of originals and one 1.75 oz (78g) bag of sugar free caramels. Assuming that the price is similar, which I believe to be the case, then obviously the original is the better value.

Nutrition: The serving sizes are similar but not identical (6 pieces and 38g for the originals vs 37g for sugar free). The originals have 160 calories per serving vs, 120 calories for the sugar free caramels. The sugar free version has exactly half the fat of the originals (5g total fat, 3g saturated fat for the originals and divide by 2 to get the sugar free content). Carbs are also similar (30g fat free vs. 30g original variety).

In short, they're both tasty but the original version is better on several fronts. I'd rate the original caramels 5 stars and the sugar-free version 4 stars.

I have been a fan of Werther’s Original Hard Candies for some time, so I thought I’d give this product a try. Though not overly enthusiastic about caramel, I read the description and decided to take a chance.

What a good decision! These individually wrapped caramels are, as advertised, soft and chewy, and are more pleasant than traditional hard caramels. The flavor is fresh, with no lingering aftertaste. They proved an enjoyable quick snack.

With practically the whole world addicted to chocolate this and chocolate that, it’s refreshing to come across a non-chocolate confection for those of us who wouldn’t perish without a daily fix of chocolate.

Another good point: you don’t have to worry about fillings coming loose with these candies, since their creamy nature makes them easier to chew than the hard caramel alternatives.

My two complaints have to do with packaging and size. First, the bag should have a reclosable feature. Many candies have this convenience which avoids having individual candies falling out or having to put a rubber band around the opened package. Second, I’d have preferred a more generous portion — say, 6 ounces instead of 4.51.

I remember as a kid in the 70's the Kraft Caramels that were buttery smooth and creamy. You could almost envision and taste a delicious caramel apple from that time. The caramel taste was very specific. It lacked that butterscotch "toffee" fakeness that abounds in anything caramel these days. UNTIL these Werther's Original Soft Caramels came on the scene.

These are delicious and they taste exactly like the Kraft Caramels that I have missed so much over the past 40 years. I am not sure when Kraft changed their recipe but if you are like me and you long for that recipe from long ago. These caramels really hit the spot.

These are distinct from the Werther's hard candy ... totally different. These are not a soft version of their hard candy - these are buttery, creamy caramels. No toffee taste, no hint of butterscotch ... just caramel.

If you long for the taste of the older Kraft recipe, these are a great treat that will bring you back. In their own right, they are a REALLY yummy caramel. 6 pieces to a serving and 160 calories. They are worth every single calorie.

Feels like a bit of a throwback for me with very sweet memories. I hope you experience the same thing! :-) Enjoy!
