TLDR at the bottom. For the rest of you, this is a long one.

I'm no stranger to Ensiferum. I've been an avid follower since late 2007 / early 2008, when I discovered them at the age of fourteen. I have an unhealthy amount of merch, and I must have given each of their albums at least two-hundred full spins by now, save for Unsung Heroes, and that's not even guessing at the countless times I listened to individual songs.

Anyway, being less than thrilled with Unsung Heroes, my love for Ensiferum has taken a back seat for the last couple of years. Heroes felt phoned in when compared to any previous offering, and no, I don't mean strictly compared to the Jari years. It's been eleven years; I think it's time to get over the fact that Jari has moved on. I for one enjoy both the Jari and post-Jari eras equally. One Man Army has brought Ensiferum back for me in a big way. I haven't been this excited for an album since Wintersun's Time I, and From Afar prior to that. So before I get into specifics, I'll just say that I absolutely love this album.

I suppose it is worth explaining what I don't like about Unsung Heroes. To be brief, it seemed devoid of the passion poured into your typical Ensiferum album. It lacked direction, and seemed like a mixed bag of the worst aspects of previous releases, along with a handful of hit-and-miss experiments. As much as I love Sami, his vocals don't carry songs well. Ensiferum has always had success with their style for a multitude of reasons, but one of the biggest in terms of fitting that style has been choirs comprised of the voices of regular guys (Sami, Markus), instead of professionally trained and gifted vocal performers.

I have really got to say that Ensiferum are one of those bands that just will not let up. Some may say that that their previous album, “Unsung Heroes,” was a bit of a letdown, but upon the release of this magnificent masterpiece – FEAR NOT! This album returns their brutal style with a bang, and they do it in spades at that. Having been a fan of Ensiferum, as well as of the folk metal sub-genre as a whole, I simply had to pick this up when I finally had the chance, and now I have no regrets at all.

Let me start by saying that there is not a whole lot I can say that has already been said by my fellow reviewer, Joshua G. I very much agree that this album contains all the elements that can be expected in an Ensiferum album. Fast-paced, yet steady and catchy at times, complex rhythms, amazing choral arrangement, aggressive riffs, thundering drums… honestly, what more can I say? This whole album, from start to finish is simply one hell of a masterpiece, and has everything that one could want in a folk metal album. Ensiferum do not disappoint this time around, I can assure anyone of that.

Seriously, if you like quality folk metal, then you simply have to pick up this album without delay, no questions asked. If you were downed in confidence by “Unsung Heroes,” this album is guaranteed to revitalize your spirit. Just buy the album already! You know you want to!

I really like this album. Definitely a new vibe coming from ensiferum.the only tracks that I didn't like are Candor and Lies and it's Finnish version. 2 of Spades is a fun song. Definetly different for them. It's like a hair metal- europop- surf rock song with different content than ensiferum usual themes. But I like it. I'm going to go see them in concert this weekend and I couldn't be more stoked.

I very much wanted to give this a 5/5 and if I could I would rate it a 4.5/5. Very solid album with a couple of "goodies" at the end. A couple songs are kind of meh but only 2-3. Everything else is rock solid. I am glad Ensiferum is back. Really one of the best folk metal bands out there and this album proves it.

This is my first Ensiferum CD. I was at Best Buy and was looking through CDS , thirst for some new metal to hear.
Yes i still buy CDS, because i do want bands to keep release albums and Rock / Metal needs our support. Buying their albums it's our only support.
I like the music , it's a nice combo of Nordic folk with metal and mythology in lyrics. I like the choirs in the songs and the keyboards . You get the idea. Headbanging music. It's creative , nothing that you never heard before , but i did enjoy my first Ensiferum experience.
Another reason to buy CDS : the art on the booklet is great and there is a 2nd disc with 4 bonus songs.

Okay, I waited a long time for this one and I finally got it. What's to say about it? It's different, that's for sure! First off the polished pro-tooled production is gone in place of a more straight forward analog sound that I love but has become so trendy the last few years, but my Finnish brothers and sister pull it off rather uniquely. I feel the bass could have been a lot higher in the mix but it's more jelled in the mix than anything. Drum sound is great guitars are powerful and clean. Vocally, their going for more of a harsh for verses and group choir for choruses instead of Sammi singing the chorus cleanly.
Lets talk about the songs in general. We start off with a cool intro as always, then we go into Axe of Judgement which really comes out of the gates hyper speed. Heathen Horde and One man Army follow the same formulas and are decent songs and will most likely be live staples for tours to come. After this the record looses some steam but starts to get exciting again with the wonderful Two of Spades! This is classic Ensiferum! I really love the 70's Wild West, Western-disco tongue-in-cheek part. Some people would call it cheesey, I call it classic Ensiferum. and its little diddys like this that really made me fall in love with this band so many years ago! The rest of the album is a mix of more of the former part of the album mixed with some classic elements of albums past.
In summary I really like One Man Army! I guess they had to do something different because they took a lot of s*** for Unsung Heroes which I thought was a brilliant album. But in the long run I think this album is a start of a new era for the band. Their on a new label their broadening their sound...I see nothing but blue skies ahead for this Finnish horde!
