I have an unusually large collection of routers. I have several excuses for this unusual confession. The main reason is that I live in a WiFi challenged house where wireless signals encounter more obstacles than the clown car at the circus. That plus my neighbors are more tech-savvy than normal and tend to own the latest greatest high power gear that wreaks havoc with my own system. The other reason I tend to acquire routers is that I write for a popular consumer tech blog and testing them is part of my job. So some are purchased out of my own pocket to keep and some are sent as evaluation samples (like this one) for me to write about. Strict rules apply however that our reviews are completely independent on any manufacturer or organization.

Of the many brands and models I’ve tested in my own home I ended up keeping Trendnet’s previous top-of-line model installed for my personal needs. For the most part it has performed well, even as I’ve added a ridiculous number of WiFi enabled toys to challenge its capabilities.

And that is what this newest generation of router from Trendnet is trying to address … today’s wireless-enabled home where devices of all kinds put simultaneous demands of the wireless signal. Here’s an example of what I’m talking about. As of today I have the following WiFi-enabled devices at home: 2 Smart TV’s; 5 Smartphones; 3 wireless tablets; 3 laptops; a graphics desktop computer; 3 wireless TiVo’s; 5 wireless printers; a WiFi garage door opener; a WiFi thermostat; two types of video security systems plus a WiFi enabled perimeter alarm system; a WiFi multi-room audio system; 3 digital cameras that utilize WiFi, 2 Harmony WiFi remote control systems and yes even more. The more “stuff” I add the more my router gets confused.

Review for the Trendnet TEW-827DRU/A:

First off, this is a router that is optimized for gaming, but doesn't necessarily mean you need to be a gamer to own one. What makes it a gaming router are the features that make it a low latency router, due to powerful radios and performance processors. In gaming, latency is one of the factors that can make or break a match. This is a low latency router, hence it is a gaming router.

Packaging:
Nice packaging. Kept the router secure during shipping.
Came with the router, antenna, power cord, network cable, users guide CD, installation guide, and a support number leaflet.
The antennas were tucked away and initially hard to find.
Preset wireless settings affixed to the outside of the routers plastic shipping bag. Handy to have but would have been nice if it was affixed to the router via removable sticker.

Installation & Set-up:
Installation & setup took under 5 minutes to replace my Apple Airport with the Trendnet TEW-827DRU/A. The Wizard that was supposed to pop up once connecting the network cable never did appear, but I’m doing the setup with a Apple MacBook Pro so that may have been the issue. I connected with the default IP address and went into the settings. There is an “Apply Changes” button during the setup that you need to click even though you have clicked save on several options. This applies the changes and will reboot the router. Overall this was the easiest router set-up I’ve experienced. Set-up was a 2/10 for difficulty.

Performance:
Performance was very good. The Trendnet TEW-827DRU/A has a handy network-monitoring graphic that shows what devices are on your network and what their data usage is.

I decided on the TEW-827GRU because I have been running an older Trendnet TEW-673GRU router for six years without any problems. I have only basic needs for router speeds and services and actually my older router was doing great but just wanted to update. We have two iPhones, two iPads, two laptops, one desktop, a Surface Pro4, smart TV’s and smart thermostat. I only have 30Mbs internet service with a single level home.
Installing turned out to be a challenge since my main desktop computer failed the day of the install. After studying the quick start procedures I used my HP Windows 10 laptop which picked up the router as soon as it was connected. The Trendnet software indicated it could not connect to the internet through my cable modem. During the process of shutting down reconnecting numerous times and checking my internet, both Microsoft Edge and Fire Fox on my laptop would not connect to the routers IP 192.168.10.1 for some unknown reason. Since I was not aware of that fact I kept trying and finally called Trendent Tech service. I dreaded calling for help but it was painless and without wait time. The service tech was great and within ten minutes he politely told me my laptop was the issue. Luckily I had a second laptop that connected right away to the router. The rest of the setup was straight forward.
The new router has definitely increased the signal strength on both 2.4Ghz. and 5Ghz. I took my iPhone outside to check signal strength. The router is located in the rear of the house and with that in mind I walked towards the rear of the property. In line of sight I was getting a 2.4Ghz. signal 200’ away with speed test of about 15Mbs. I walked to the front of the house and the signal strength decreased significantly since there was two more walls it had to travel through. Router is working perfect although I had concerns of the operating temperature but it’s just warm to the touch. I am very pleased with this purchase and all it has to offer for expansion.
