See my 6 month and one year reviews at the bottom. Now a 5 star.

Monday I received my long awaited printer. I thought I would wait a couple of days until I had some experience and then post my thoughts. My first impressions were quite good. The unit looks good, well built with all wiring cleanly aligned and secured. My unit would not feed the filament at first so I sent an email to support and received a phone call within an hour, not many companies will do that. The support rep Charles and I went through a process of trying some things and finally found the problem with the extrusion head had been knocked off center during shipping. Once that was snapped back into place all worked as it should. My first print (white ABS filament comes with the printer) was their demo part, a miniature bird bath. It came out excellent. I then tried one of my SolidWorks parts saved in STL format and the printed parts came out terrible. Again, I emailed XYZ and received a prompt reply back from Charles to try and correct my STL files with this online free service, SAVE THIS ADDRESS you will need it if using STL files NETFABB CLOUD SERVICE. My parts were uploaded and emailed back to me within 5 minutes. It must be an automated process. You can also download a free program and do your own file corrections, no special talent needed. I then retried my parts and they came out great. This is for a product I am developing for one of my clients and the parts will be made from ABS. I have found standard stereolithography material (STL laser generated parts) are very accurate but 7% heavier than ABS. This product I am designing is very weight sensitive. So I now have all my prototype parts and will be building our first test unit. Here are some things that are not clear in the printer description:.

Let's be clear, buying a 3D printer for $500 is exactly what you think it is. Any other system that is shipped as a complete unit is triple this cost to get high quality results. It's unfair to slam the makers of this product if you're looking for high quality at a low price point. However, if you are patient, you can tune this machine to be great. If you wanted a 3D printer, hopefully you're the advanced DIY type and don't mind getting creative.
Our system:
Out of the box we had a non-functional LCD screen like many others, and turning the unit on did nothing but have the white LED lights turn on and the X-axis motor homed. That's it. There was filament residue around the nozzle which seemed like it was a used model, or it was tested prior to shipping (but wouldn't it work out of the box if it were thoroughly tested?) A quick tour of the system's wiring found the Y-axis wiring harness had gotten loose and fallen out. No problem, reattaching the wiring harness had the system fire up with X & Y axis homing. But still no LCD screen. We popped the panels loose, traced the flat ribbon cable feeding the LCD panel and found a small cut which disrupted one of the outer thin wires. Folding that back into place with some tape fixed that problem. Now the system fires up and we could start working with the software. Is the lack of English instructions a pain in the butt, yeah, but some common sense goes a long way.
The software installed OK, but an update was needed which was easy to download and install for 64 bit Windows 7 Pro (not sure about Windows 8, may be a compatibility issue for some) That software works fine for what it is, just interprets the 3D .stl files for the printer and let's you choose your printing resolution and some other options which to me is pretty cool.

Got mine yesterday from Amazon... So far pretty happy with it. Easy to setup was printing a sample in 20 minutes. It's a little slower than a Makerbot which I have owned but for $500 it cannot be beat. Make sure when loading your cartridge to hold down on it so it's seated tightly before putting the hold down clip back in I didn't it was telling me no cartridge was loaded holding it down tightly and putting the clip back in fixed the issue.

A few days on it now still working like a champ. Loading new cartridges can be tricky had it tell me cartridge not load a few times I just make sure I pull the cartridge tight to the front of the unit on my machine before putting the cartridge clip back in works every time. I also found that I need to put the glue stick material down where the print head places the first string of the plastic to the right when flushing the tip for printing if I did not do that it would sometimes come loose and stick to the head and muck up the print job. Otherwise it just works...

3rd update still plugging away this is a great printer runs flawlessly ran a 6 hour build the other day a skull off of thingaverse printed it great. The only quirk is it does not seem to want to lay down the initial prime of plastic so it sticks otherwise prints very well. I have used white, green, blue and black plastic without issue. $500 well spent I had been looking at getting a Makerbot Mini but as usual Makerbot is quick to promise very slow on delivery... So this fit the bill for me...

4th update now have 110 hours on it no problems it just works.... It's still easily worth the $500 it cost I would buy it again...

5th update still no issues I have never had to recalibrate it is still running with what it came with as far as calibration goes from the factory.... Rock solid performer it just works!
