If feeding Nutro Farm's Harvest Dog Food for the first time, we suggest you blend increasing amounts of Nutro Farm's Harvest X Dog Food with your old food for six days. Individual dogs’ energy requirements may differ. Adjust the amount fed to obtain or maintain your dog’s optimum weight. Keep fresh drinking water available at all times, provide plenty of exercise and see your veterinarian regularly. Serve dry or lightly moistened. To help maintain freshness, we recommend sealing the bag tightly and storing it in a cool, dry location.

This is a genuinely interesting new pet food by Nutro, a company that has actually been in this business since 1926. These particular dog's food contains five real fruits and vegetables: sweet potatoes, apples, green beans, peas, and cranberries. The shape of this food is so very different from all other animal food we've used in the past, and our dog liked it from the very first bite. When it comes to dog's food, that's the #1 thing I am looking into. Then the quality of course, and the ethics of the company. Quality is there, and so is ethics. This company makes all their products in the U.S., with products never outsourced. Also, they use non-GMO ingredients, so we are happy that these choices are being made in this market, and for all of these reasons, we can't give this product less than 5 stars. HIghly recommended!

A good, if expensive, food for working or lactating dogs. Well worth the price if you consider the nutrient level and apparent healthiness of the ingredients.

Now, let's delve some into the specifics that justify, or, at least, support the above statement.

What is the protein content? Minimum of 25%. Peteducation.com (http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?c=2+1659&aid=702) recommends 25 to 28 or 35 percent protein for performance dogs (25%) for racing sled dogs (35%) or 28% for lactating bitches or puppies. But for your typical adult dog (the one taking after a couch potato such as me, in other words, most dogs, 18 percent is the standard.

So, is there harm in feeding too much protein? Probably, the only serious harm is your bank account. Most excess protein passes through the dog at the end opposite from the entry point.

If, though, you have puppies or lactating mothers, you will want to buy a feed that is even higher in protein than this one.

Another point to bear in mind is, most critters consume food in a quantity to satisfy their energy needs. This food, lower in energy content, is likely to be eaten in a greater quantity than a food of less protein. That makes this food, possibly, still more expensive than the cheaper stuff, UNLESS you mix it with a lower protein, lower cost feed that is substantially higher in grains and fats.

Another important point is to introduce this, or any other new food, gradually into the dog's diet. This allows the dog's digestive tract (and resident microbes, etc) to adjust. This will reduce the likelihood of diarrhea and other such issues. By the way, if memory serves me, an excess of protein often causes diarrhea.

My dogs love this food. I'm pretty picky about what I give them because I want to know that they aren't getting a lot of fillers. I admit that seeing pieces of actual dried food (beans, cranberries, potato) was a huge draw for me. I like thinking that they are getting real food instead of just dried bits of something that cannot be identified.

Overall, this seems to be great for them. One dog has dry skin pretty often and she hasn't really had that issue. The other dog just likes to eat and enjoys the food.

To be clear, though: my dogs are not picky. I feed one of them raw baby carrots when I get some out to snack on. The other will take it and eat it so long as she doesn't need to be near the first one to do it. They will also eat pieces of melon, apple slices, fresh or canned pumpkin... stuff that's really good for them. One dog will spit some stuff out because she thinks you're holding out on her, but she generally goes back to finish it.

I can't say how a picky eater would respond to this food. I know that my two dogs (large breed) enjoy the food a great deal.

I recently discovered the Farm's Harvest line at a local pet superstore. I purchased it as it has real pieces of fruits and vegetables and came in a meat that our dog likes. I am very pleased with how eager she is to eat this. We've been struggling for the last year to find a food that our dog would eat and have tried many brands, even other Nutro items.

I've tried a number of premium brands for my Pomeranians - Bil-Jac, Blue Buffalo - and the inevitable result would be that one would like it and the other two didn't.

Gave this variety of Nutro a try and wow - they all LOVE it. I thought they'd pick out the vegetables and leave the kibble aside but they polish off the kibble as well. Never thought my picky eaters would agree on one food but now they have. Please keep making this!

Our dogs enjoy this food. The will sometimes leave the dried cranberries after eating the rest of the food. I just leave them in their bowls and eventually they eat them. Ingredients are natural and I feel like our "small" dogs are having a more consistent bowel movements. I buy the chicken and lamb flavor for small dogs. Great price on Amazon.

My lab has been eating Nutro since he was a puppy so no surprise he loved his food. His elderly lab friend loved it too and gobbled up a whole bowl after having trouble with his appetite for the last several months. He's still eating this food with fewer appetite problems. No weight loss or gain either.

Also doesn't hurt that it doesn't have a "dog food smell".
