Dogs are carnivores. It's a sometimes unappealing truth with their propensity to rodents and bugs. Of course dos will chew on a shrub or a plastic toy until they're completely consumed, but that doesn't change their natural carnivorous physiology. So, that presents a problem when you have a treat with the #1 ingredient being chickpeas. Sure, it has poultry flavoring, but this is a vegetarian treat. The one interesting thing Greenies did with this treat to make them as nutritious as a meaty treat is to use chelation to bind minerals and amino acids. This increases the intake of the minerals while also giving the puppies some much-needed protein. It's unclear whether this is really beneficial for the little guy, but one a day mixed with a wide range of other food won't hurt him.
Our little Gumbo loves them. Once he's allowed to get the treat he takes it to another room and holds it between his paws like a real toothbrush. It's pretty freakin' adorable.

We have been a Greenies family for quite a few years. It has been enjoyed by my Two Yorkies as a reward and me for improved dental hygiene and breath. Since my receipt of this box, we have lost a beloved friend, Liza and added a new friend, a rescue pup, who is in large part Schnauzer.
Both dogs enjoy this new version a great deal, they run to separate places to savor this special treat.
My one concern is that despite it is grain free it has a modest level of protein (not recommended for dogs that have renal/kidney disease) at 23%. For older dogs, kidney disease is a silent killer until it reaches advance stages, so please perform blood tests your dog and cats regularly when they become older.
Since, I see no ingredient picture posted presently by the company nor reviewers, I will include the ingredients in order as they are listed. They are: Dried chickpeas, gelatin (source unnamed), glycerin, powdered cellulose, dried potato, water, lecithin, potato protein, natural poultry flavor, minerals (dicalcium chelate, zinc amino acid, iron amino acid chelate, copper amino acid chelate, manganese chelate, potassium iodide ), choline chloride, dried apple pomace, fruit juice color, vitamins (di-alpha tocopherol acetate -source of vitamin E), vitamin B12 supplement, d-calcium pantothentate (vitamin B5), niacin supplement, vitamin A supplement, riboflavin supplement (vitamin B2), vitamin D3 supplement, biotin, pyridoxine hydrochoride (vitamB6, thiamin mononitrate (B1), folic acid, turmeric color.
