Directions

The test K9, not known for being finicky and a known lover of Greenies, commenced eating the treat at 12:13 PM PST.

Test K9 was happily occupied with chewing the Greenie for five minutes. I have to say that I like the Freshmint smell much better than the normal barley grass smell of the Greenies we usually buy.

Within two minutes of eating the new Greenie, the test K9 is now begging to test the chili currently cooking on the stove. That is not happening as it contains onions, which would make the dog sick. In any event, although unhappy about the no-go regarding the chili, the dog seems satisfied with the Greenie product AND his breath smells better.

Dental chews are a must for my large Labrador Retriever/ Border Collie mix dog. They really help maintain clean teeth and gums.

I started with Dentastix as 3 large packs from the big C warehouse were very reasonably priced. He loves those but takes seconds to eat one so I moved on to Nubz that were harder to bite through and thought they would last a while. He hated those and would actually whine every time I offered him one. So I had to throw them out. Next came Checkups made with all natural ingredients, he doesn't hate those but eats them only if he's super hungry and there is no meal in sight for hours.

So in desperation I tried the expensive but the most recommended and trusted brand Greenies and purchased a multi-pack box as a Christmas gift. Greenies has a high protein content of 28%. Dentastix has only 4% protein and is mostly chemicals, and Checkups has only 10%. The main ingredients in Checkups are potato flour and rice flour but Greenies has the main ingredient as Wheat Flour.

Although Large size is recommended for my 70 lb dog, these are pricey so I buy the regular size that offers a few more per pack than the Large size. The regular size Greenies are fairly adequate for my dog, and last him 1.5-2 minutes of chewing. Almost nothing lasts him longer anyway, he literally inhales everything. However, he is sometimes semi-reluctant to eat these Greenies. For some mysterious reason Dentastix is the only product he greets with actual enthusiasm, which is sad as it has the worst ingredients. On second thoughts, even my teen prefers box mac and cheese to the one made from scratch...go figure.

So I wanted to try these Freshmint Greenies that have a fresher and mintier taste - they smell good to me and I hoped my dog would think so too.Read more ›

I have a dog who periodically gets a sour stomach. Although the vet is unconcerned, when stricken he fizzes and has breath that makes sewer gas smell like eau de parfum. I figured these mint greenies would freshen his breath and possibly sooth his stomach.
The treats come in a much appreciated resealable bag. Shaped like a toothbrush, they are about four inches long and dark green. Designed for dogs 25-50 pounds, they can be broken (by hand) to accommodate smaller pets. They feel a bit rubbery when breaking but no great force is needed. They smell like minty biscuits. All my dogs enjoyed these (the German Shepherds as well as the Chinese Cresteds). It did seem to help the little guy with the sour stomach.

Greenies are made in the United States. I was unable to determine from the package or the website where the ingredients were sourced. So I called customer service and was informed by a pleasant fellow that all but the Vitamin D in this product is from the US. The Vitamin D comes from China.

Although I try to avoid feeding my dogs anything containing foreign ingredients, this product is an effective breath freshener. It is a healthy treat that contributes to dental health that the dogs truly enjoy. The bag makes them easy to tote. I would avoid using on carpets or flooring that stains. Although I usually make my own treats (check the recipe on Darla Cook's website and also YouTube and Toothbrush Metal Cookie Cutter ) this is a commercial product I would purchase in the future.

I can't say that these are the best for teeth-cleaning, because I'm not a vet or a dentist, but the second my husband and I are about to leave the house, the dogs go and sit by their crates because everybody knows going in the crate means it's Greeny time. Sometimes just me putting on jeans (instead of pajama pants) and a hoody gets them all excited. That and saying the word Greeny.
As far as teeth-cleaning, our vet says our dogs teeth are perfect and that the Greenies are great for anyone who can't motivate themselves to physically brush their dogs' teeth. Also, my dogs seem to have significantly better breath than my friends' dogs, although I'm not certain that's exactly probative.

Dog likes these a lot, but prefers the original flavor. He would still "kill" for either flavor. I don't understand the appeal of these things to dogs but I've never heard of a dog that doesn't love 'em. Considering the size and how fast a dog can gobble one up it is essential that you supervise your dog eating this to ensure he won't choke on it. Don't worry, it won't take long!
