Initial Review 10/22/2015:
This will be a pretty thorough rolling review for the Asustor AS5110T, 10bay NAS. I work in Enterprise IT and work regularly with storage solutions such as EMC, NetApp, Fujitsu Eternus and Dell Equallogic. Since this really isn't an 'enterprise' level device, I won't compare directly but will draw comparisons between the different brands.

My home lab has been expanding for a while so I decided to bite the bullet and purchase the Asustor AS5110T 10bay NAS unit. My old setup consisted of a Lenovo/EMC PX6-300D (amazing device) and two Drobo Elites (less than amazing). I was looking for a device that was fast, expandable and reliable and the idea is that the AS5110T will ultimately replace all three.

Unboxing:
Opening new IT equipment, to me, is like Christmas. I love taking off the plastic and smelling that fresh Chinese factory air. But seriously, you get to learn a good deal about a manufacturer by the way they package the products they ship. Enterprise equipment always ships in the thickest, highest quality cardboard (I know it sounds dumb, but you want to know your equipment is safe in shipping) with top quality packaging inside to keep things safe. While the packaging quality Asustor uses isn't 'enterprise', they do use higher quality cardboard than what I'm used to with home/small business units and utilize foam inserts to keep the NAS completely stationary and wiggle free in the box. Everything fit together perfectly and the NAS was neatly wrapped in plastic. I was pleasantly surprised with the packaging. 4/5

The Asustor 10-bay Desktop Network Attached Storage (AS5110T) is almost ready to compete with the more established vendors out there. Having experience with Synology, Qnap and Thecus devices I was excited to get this installed in to my home network.

Initial setup is SIMPLE....easy...no really. If you have any experience with network devices at all you can get this unit setup in no time. Unlike the Synology boxes the drive trays use traditional screws to secure the drives to the tray but you can easy install either 3.5" or 2.5" drives.

Once installed (including extra memory) the unit setup was similar to other vendors. An app 'store' you can select and install the various applications and they are instantly downloaded and installed. I didn't have any real issue with getting any apps loaded or configured. For anyone familiar with another platform there is the standard learning curve of terms, and locations for things like adding users, adjusting Network info, Storage management etc. The one thing that did stand out is many of the app windows are not re-sizable and there a bit of scrolling that you will encounter. The individual windows are not big so scrolling is minimal but it would have been much nicer to have re-sizable windows.

Loading the device with my current data load of around 14TB started off easy enough. I was seeing steady transfers of between 80-110ish MB/s. Then the problems started. During a straight copy of data from a Windows 10 PC on the same switch (no routing or long distances involved here) the NAS would just freeze.Read more ›

Similar to the other reviewer that noted "freezes", I too am having the same issue(s). The web-based management console will some times not be accessible. Other times when you are in the console, selecting a function will require a pause and after 20-30 seconds the selected function will be available. This same freezing takes place when accessing network shares that are hosted within the NAS. When opening file explorer in windows, it can some times take 30-40 seconds for the file tree to display. When opening a picture or copying a file, another 30-40 seconds can go by before the file is displayed. Sadly, I did not experience any type of exceptional customer service by Asustor. In fact, I received no customer service at all. I used the Asustor support portal to submit a case and attach a copy of the NAS health log. It has been well over a week with no response from the vendor. I like the build quality of the unit, the user interface/console and speed; however the product has to be usable, supported by the vendor and rock solid at this price point. I'll let Amazon deal with the vendor on the return as I'm done with them.
