Tesoro has been one of the recent accessory companies that has come out of nowhere in the last few years and has provided gamers with some spectacular pieces. From their solid 7.1 surround headset to the previously reviewed Excalibur backlit mechanical keyboard. We really enjoyed the solid feedback that the Excalibur provided as an affordable mechanical keyboard. With excellent actuation, the Excalibur is still one of our favorite mechanical keyboards and a few months after the release of the original Excalibur, Tesoro refreshes the keyboard with a new backlight feature; full spectrum lighting. Read on to hear our impressions.

Physically the Excalibur Spectrum is identical to the Excalibur as the primary change to the Spectrum is the backlighting. The original keyboard had a wonderful deep blue backlight that could be turned on or off with no other real options. The Spectrum changes the game though, adding a number of color modes to the keyboard's backlighting. Where previous iterations had a single color, nearly the entire color spectrum is represented on this new release and it is wonderful. I honestly have not had as much fun with a simple keyboard in all my years working with computers; there is something absolutely joyous about the vibrant light show that the Spectrum provides.

There is an option that is a full spectrum wave, which shows all of the colors as it moves from left to right. This is definitely one of my favorite modes, though with Spring now here my office tends to be a bit brighter and the effect is not nearly as impressive so I have switched to the Trigger effect. This particular effect lights up each key as it is struck in a soft blue that is quite pleasing.

Great Keyboard, oh but wait! Maybe not? The finer details it lacks...
Mixed feelings on this keyboard...

It's a great keyboard but there are a few things that might be a turning point for me. A MAJOR issue is my MOBO does not see it on boot so I can not get into my BIOS. Once window starts it works great but since it's not posting on my motherboard bios it's a big issue as I like to get in there and change settings often! Why would they do this? I emailed Tesoro and asked and they said this is the first time they heard of this. As suggested I downloaded and updated my keyboards BIOS and it still did not post. Be aware of the keyboard BIOS update because it's not very clear what it's doing but you have to run it twice, or I forget the details now but many people think it just bricks their keyboard but you actually have to run it twice but nowhere does it say this. This keyboard could be a defect but I doubt it. I think something is going on with how it handles power from the usb ports. Granted it could just be an issue with my ASUS board but I doubt that. Another big issue for me is the switches. They feel just clunky. I got my keyboard with the brown switches, Kailh brown switches. They are a bit more wobbly than Cherry MX switches and it shows most to me on the browns because the browns have this slight dull long bump with no audio feedback. It's a funky feeling tactile feel that I don't care for right now. Maybe I will get use to it but for now not so much. They don't feel like a sharp quick snap like the Cherry Browns and I barely feel them at all on keypress and only feel it sometimes on the key rebound. I have sensitive sissy finger tips I guess so this is noticeable to me. It's a weird feeling and like I said just dull sluggish bump I don't like. Maybe some prefer this?

I'll start with the practical side of things. I would highly recommend this keyboard for anybody who constantly types for work or school. I spent years using a super-slim keyboard because I thought the incredibly short height would allow me to type faster. This is true when compared to regular keyboards but a mechanical keyboard is a whole different ballpark. I've found my speed has increased from 75+ wpm to 95+ wpm. It has also alleviated much of the pain I felt in my hands after 8-10 hours at work. My brother has several mechanical keyboards and he talked me through the different key switches and I found the Blue was most agreeable for typing.

Now for the fun part. Not only can the back light be set to any color, it also has programmable effects. The light can be constant or triggered by the keys you press (in different patterns). I think there are 7 different programmable effects for the back light. If you are someone who HAS to change something up in your office regularly, this keyboard might do the trick. A disclaimer though- there is a rainbow effect as in the picture but it is a rippling rainbow not a static one. Maybe I'm missing an option to make it static but I find the rippling highly distracting.

This is by far the best keyboard I have ever had. The keys are solid, they have a nice, audible click when you hit them. You can tell the keyboard is quality before you open the box; it is heavy! The lighting is gorgeous and you can change the settings to anything you like. There is even a program that allows you to color each individual key any color you want! I personally leave it on the rainbow wave as it just looks so awesome. I game a lot and type a lot and find that the red switch is effective for both. It took some getting used to, but I love typing AND gaming on this keyboard.
