To start this review I need to mention that I am a part of a beta review program and have been provided with a free NETGEAR AC1200 WiFi USB 2.0 Adapter – model A6200. What follows is my honest opinion of the product and corresponding software.

To begin, the installation was very easy and straightforward. The product came with a CD with the required software but the laptop I was using didn’t have a disc drive. The instructions, however, clearly stated the online location of the software so in a matter of minutes I had it downloaded and installed and the device up and running.

I had the hardware plugged into a USB port on the side of the laptop and my first thought was that the unit is a bit large and I was concerned that it might be easy to hit and break off. Fortunately the device has the ability to bend to a right angle to allow it to be laid out straight or folded up so if you did happen to hit it most likely it would just bend over or pop out. With that said, it also comes with a docking unit so you can plug the cord for the dock into the laptop and set the dock a few feet away. A cool feature and something that would be very handy for a desktop unit that was tucked away somewhere where the wifi signals may be poor or blocked.

The main reason I wanted this device, however, was to help with problematic wifi reception and this certainly did the trick. The laptop I used is a bit older and only supports 802.11n on the 2.4 GHz band and I ran into a lot of problems using that configuration, especially when out and about but even at home from time to time. My home router supports 802.11ac and immediately I saw better than a 10Mbs increase in speed using Speedtest.net to measure the performance.

This product works very well... when it decides to actually work... When I initially installed the product, it worked like a charm. After the first day or so, it began to frequently disconnect(multiple times per day). Once disconnected, it would not be able to re-connect to the network even though it was showing a strong signal strength the entire time. Sometimes it would reconnect on its own in a few minutes, other times I had to either unplug the adapter and plug it back in, and sometimes I even had to reinstall the driver for it to work again. I work in the IT industry, so I know quite a bit about troubleshooting faulty hardware/software. I tried changing some settings in the device manager, searching for new updated drivers, and modifying router/network settings but to no avail. I tried searching the Netgear forums, as well as other tech support forums, and discovered this issue is very widespread and has no known solution.

Unfortunately, I saw on Newegg that this product had received overwhelmingly poor reviews with a majority of reviewers reporting they faced the exact same issue with frequent disconnects and have not been given any resolution from Netgear. It's never a good sign when you google the product name (Netgear A6200) and a popular related search for it is "Netgear A6200 keeps disconnecting".

To be fair, I was able to get it to stay connected perfectly with the 2.4Ghz band (orange light)...which is why I gave 2 stars.... but I bought this because I wanted a DUAL-BAND adapter. It seems to have terrible issues maintaining a stable connection to the 5Ghz band (blue light) and will give you nightmares trying to reconnect to that same network even though it is showing maximum signal strength.

I returned this for a refund and bought a TP-Link Archer T4UH(similar price point) and it has worked perfectly for me since, and is actually able to stay connected to the 5Ghz band like it is supposed to...

I went through 5 wifi adapters, this got the strongest, most consistent signal. I'm 3 floors down from the router and I only get 10% less speed than if I were connected via Ethernet!! I highly recommend this product to anyone who needs a strong wifi signal with no fuss. Don't be dissuaded because of the USB 2.0 moniker--it is plenty fast for even the high end needs of users. I get hundreds of MBPS and I am a tech geek--I demand a high quality, consistent experience and this model delivers 100%. Don't hesitate. This is the one.

What's really great about this particular model is the following: for the money, it gets the fastest speeds I have seen. What isn't so great is that it is rather bulky. You decide what is right for you, but if performance is your #1, this is a great buy.

Disclosure: I received this USB wifi adapter from Netgear for free through their Friends and Family program, but I will give my honest unbiased review.

Likes:

The AC1200 Wifi adapter comes with a USB extension dock that allows you to move the adapter away from your laptop (since the adapter is quite large and will get in the way) or your desktop since it may sit on the ground and get bad reception.

I installed the AC1200 adapter in a laptop with built-in wifi 802.11n on 2.4ghz band. I connected the AC1200 on 5ghz and was able to get about a 30% increase in performance from the same spot, about 15 feet and 1 room over from my wifi router. I do have a 802.11-ac dual band router.

There is a antenna that is activated by swiveling it sideways on the adapter. This allows you to fine tune reception a bit compared to other adapters. I did notice that the position of the antenna does have a large effect on download speeds.

The range was improved as I moved my laptop around my house. I was getting a better, more stable connection as compared to my laptop's internal wifi.

I downloaded the drivers from the Netgear website and included in the package was a driver only install without all the additional Netgear programs.

I tried it on the external usb port of my Winbook TW802 and the adapter allowed me to stream HD content from my Silicondust HD Homerun Prime, whereas before the internal tablet wifi caused the picture to stutter badly and I had to SD resolution to get a watchable picture.

Dislikes:

The adapter itself is wide. On my laptop, it blocked the two neighboring ports on either side. Not totally blocked, but enough to render the neighboring ports inaccessible.

Verdict:

The adapter worked very well for me, it kept a good stable connection. If you are looking for an USB 802.11-ac adapter, this is a good one.
