Winery Mixed Pack Details

5.0 out of 5.0 points (1)
  • Tasting Notes
Dark, garnet color. Aromas of dark toast, smoke, clove, peppermint, wild blackberry and plum, with just a touch of dark cocoa powder. The palate is pleasantly rustic, but with a full mid-palate and a lingering dark cherry finish with just a touch of minerality. Fruit was predominately sourced from The Sagemoor Farms Vineyard in the Columbia Valley AVA. The must was pumped over for 8 days and pressed to tank, where it underwent malo-lactic fermentation. The wine was fermented to dryness on 100 % American Oak and aged on 100% French oak. It was 100% barrel aged for 8 months. Ready to drink now, this wine has the structure to age for 5 to 10 more years .
  • Three Word Taste Summary : toasty , smoked , blackberry
  • Varietal/Blend : Cabernet Sauvignon
4.7 out of 5.0 points (12)
  • Tasting Notes
Aromas of cocoa dusted coffee beans, cherries, dried strawberries and a hint of cinnamon buttered toast and vanilla. This wine has a soft, sweet entry on the palate evolving into cocoa strawberry toast and sweet cinnamon on the full mid-palate. There is good acidity and the long finish has some grip and lingering toasted tannin.
  • Three Word Taste Summary : toasty , cherry , blackberry
  • Varietal/Blend : Merlot
4.7 out of 5.0 points (24)
  • Tasting Notes
Dark, deep ruby color. Aromas of black cherry, blackberry , sweet plum fruit and sweet toasted oak with undertones of ripe melon, dried herbs and vanilla with hints of cocoa powder, tobacco and graham cracker. On the palate toasted oak and graham cracker with lively acidity, darker berry fruits, cocoa powder and sweetness, good body with well integrated tannins that linger on the long finish. A nicely balanced wine, with enough acid and tannin to make this a more serious, longer lived wine that will go well with food.
  • Three Word Taste Summary : plum , blackberry , black cherry
  • Varietal/Blend : Blend - Red

5.0 out of 5 stars My go to wines in the cellar. May 6, 2015
One single vineyard Cabernet, one single vineyard Merlot, and then the classic Cab Merlot Syrah blend for a great price. All three wines have good balance. They aren't over the top with alcohol or fruit, just very well made. Very smooth.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love the wines from Hedges June 22, 2015
Love the wines from Hedges! This 3 pack is great, an excellent selection from one of Washington's top wineries. I've bring drinking CMS for years and it's always the first bottle gone at the party. The HIP series single vineyard Cabernet and Merlot are equally as good.

4.0 out of 5 stars Wine you'll be happy with March 7, 2016

You could spend less -- or more -- but this is good wine for the average household. Wheth with dinner or a sociable cheese tray, it does not disappoint. Great to have on hand.

It arrived with a useful placemat with an image, presumaably of their premises, and a thank-you note. This placrmat is easy to wipe clean; my cats now dine on it. A friendly touch.

This is a great 3-bottle set of reds if you're looking to start or add to your collection and want some top-notch wines at excellent price points. This is not Cayuse / Quilceda Creek / Leonetti, but those are $100+ bottles and Hedges has vintages in that stratosphere if that's your thing.

If, like me, you're trying to sort out the multitude of WA wines in that $15-35 price range (and even more from CA and OR) and figure out which are the wines in there that over-deliver on value and which, quite frankly, are an expensive label on little better than $2-buck-chuck, this is firmly in the former camp. I rate the CMS as my favorite $30 and under Red blend overall, and given how much good competition there is for red blends in WA, that is saying something. I was a bit skeptical of HIP at first since there are many fancy sounding labels on mediocre wine out there that pretend to be independents delivering high quality wine at modest prices...99% of which are nice labels on lousy wine.

Both HIP wines are nice, tight expressions of a single-varietal/grape wine - still a New World style but with some French restraint, so none of the overly jammy, super-fruit-forward you get from a lot of CA wines out there. I personally do not enjoy those wines, so this is a welcome relief and both wines are a lot more sophisticated than you'd expect for something in the $20/bottle range. For some reference points, these compare favorably in my mind to Brian Carter and Cadence, two WA favorites and sit side by side with the likes of DeLille and Baer, which are both wines in the ~$40-50 range.

I will say, the HIP Cab is a truly heavy hitter Cab. Again, not a fruit bomb, but very structured, so the type of wine you'd serve with a fine ribeye, or perhaps for slow sipping.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hmmmmmm! February 13, 2016

I got to try the first of the 3 bottles a few days ago - the Merlot. There are probably certain technical terms used to describe and categorize the way wine tastes from start, middle, and completion of each sip, by wine drinkers with more experience than I have, but I will just leave it at "aaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhh". I will definitely be reordering!

Then yesterday, I got to try the Cabernet. It had the power I've come to expect of Cabernet, but with a silken elegance, like a steel fist of Cabernet in a velvet glove.

I still have the mixed red yet to try. I look forward to it, not as a pleasant glass of wine, but as a wine tasting experience.

4.0 out of 5 stars 2011 syrah is my favorite... February 16, 2016
Verified Purchase
I like the 2011 vintage best. The Syrah mix, but generally I prefer a wine that's from the vineyard in name rather th a in the "valley mix. That some wineries use. That's why the Syrah was unexpected.
I usually like a straight red or merlot with a great nose, and good legs, that have individual trails on the glass rather than a layer of film from the s sugar.. I 've written you about your business cards before boo, in case that reminds you of who I am. I find your wine up to 5 years back a pretty fair representation of Washington wine. I'm putting out a CD, the end of this month called, "Multi-Dimensional Depth PerCEpTioN", which is a concept album. I t sounds like the perfect name for a style of wine..

2.0 out of 5 stars Great packaging, poor flavors April 3, 2016

So far, I've tried 2/3 bottles and I am disappointed in the taste of the 2014 Cab and 2013 Merlot. Both have an unsatisfying body - too light. The Cab smelled oddly of cough syrup. Overall, the flavors of the wines actually made my dinners taste worse.

The 2 stars go entirely to packaging. The bottles look classy and it was easy to uncork. (Colmated corks were probably used.)

The wines arrived in sturdy cardboard, delivered by FedEx. I live in a secure apartment building, so FedEx had to redeliver 3 days later, which was a bit annoying.
