I've used several network extenders before, and they all had limitations and were difficult to setup. In contrast, the AC1200 is very easy to setup even for a novice, and does a stellar job at extending not just the 2.4GHz band network like its competitors, but also the 5GHz band network (if available).
To setup, simply plug in the extender in a location that is halfway between the wireless router and the distant client. Using a computer, tablet or phone (I was able to do this easily on my iPhone) connect to the wireless network called "Linksys Extender Setup" and open a web browser: it automatically connects to a wizard configuration page, where you select your existing wireless network and enter its password; do the same for the 5GHz network (if applicable) and you're pretty much done -- it takes under a minute.
Once you've done this, the "Linksys Extender Setup" wireless network disappears, but your existing network now gets four or five bars where it used to be practically out of reach.
I configured this extender to bring network access to a workshop connected to a detached garage; the wireless router is too far away and the network was very unreliable. I simply plugged it into a wall outlet in the garage that is in line of sight of the house.
The speed test reports 56mbps down/5.5mbps up, which is exactly what I get when I connect a laptop directly to the cable router via ethernet -- before, I was getting 1 to 3mbps and a connection that was flaking out several times a day. I had also tried PowerLine extenders, which were giving me 15mbps download speeds but would also flake out every once in a while. So far, the AC1200 is giving me full internet speed without having to run a wire, and without any dropouts or problems.

This is the second Linksys wifi extender I've tried, and both have fallen well short.

As with the Linksys AC1200 MAX Wi-Fi Range Extender with High-Gain Antennas (RE6500HG-FFP), set-up was easy. You plug this in to any outlet that is in range to receive at least 50% signal from your existing router -- Linksys now offers an app to help find a good spot if you need it -- wait for a solid green light and then log in to the "Linksys Extender Setup" network from either your computer or mobile device to complete set-up.

From there, you simply select the wireless network you want to extend, enter the password (works with WPA and WPA2 secured networks only) and the extender should be up and running. It's also nice that this features a pass-through outlet, so it's not even really taking up an electrical plug.

For me, install was simple and painless though, at the time of this review, the detailed instructions/set-up link goes to an error page on the Linksys site. (I didn't need it, and assume it will eventually be complete, but weird and sloppy it's not already active, even for a new product.)

And, again, as with the AC1200 Max, I saw an instant increase in wireless signal strength. (Gauged using the "Wireless Signal" app on my MacBook Pro.) Where before it was listing a 60% signal, it had now jumped to 80-90% (fluctuated).

But, oddly, while the signal strength went up, the potential throughput listed by Wireless Signal had decreased, though it was still well above my fairly meagre Internet connection. (We live in a slightly rural area so the best speed we have is 6 Mbps up and down.

First, let me say that this was a breeze to set up. Plug in, connect to the extender, and enter the password. I was up and running in a minute or two. It could not be easier.
So, does it extend the range? Absolutely! It did a fabulous job of doubling the range I currently have which is more than what I was looking for.
So why the two stars? My speed went from 66 Mbps to 24 Mbps in my home right next to my router (not the extender). The speed next to the extender was 17Mbps.
I am OK with the lower speeds in the extended range, however, dropping from 66 to 24 Mbps next to the router is unacceptable. We stream all of our TV, movies and video games and desperately need that 66 Mbps in the main rooms of the house.
Strangely enough, our upload speeds stayed the same.
The extender is now unplugged and will sit in a box unless Linksys has an update or a way to fix this problem.

This is my first experience with a network extender and I found the AC1200 very easy to setup even for a first timer and it boosts my wireless signal to the point I can access it anywhere in the house and even on the patio and front porch.

Setup couldn't be easier. All you have to do is plug in the unit at a location about halfway between your router and the furthest point to which you want to extend access. Using any device with wireless capability and a browser connect to the wireless network called "Linksys Extender Setup" and open your browser: The unit will connect to a wizard configuration page, where you select your existing wireless network and enter its password. That's it, you're all done. The "Linksys Extender Setup" listing goes away and you're left with a much stronger wireless signal.

There is something odd about wireless internet access in my neighborhood. It is not just my home but others in the area that have trouble throwing a signal any distance. I don't know if it's RF interference, some common constriction material or what, but my ISP technician says it is common in my area.

Without the extender I have slow or no access from locations more than 30 feet from the router. With the unit plugged in, the rangers than doubles and the speed is comparable to wired Ethernet access. The passthrough is also a nice feature considering my house is "mid century" and doesn't suffer from an overabundance of outlets.

So far the unit has worked flawlessly with no dropouts or slowdowns. While I have no other extender experiences to compare it with, the AC1200 is working great for me and I highly recommend it.
