Ever since hearing Tortoise's track Djed, from their second album, Millions Now Living Will Never Die, on college radio, some twenty years ago, I've been a huge fan of Tortoise. Hearing the changes this band has gone through, while still retaining that distinct Tortoise sound has always been fascinating. After a string of excellent LPs, starting with "Millions..." and ending with "It's All Around You", "Beacons of Ancestorship" was somewhat of a disappointment, as the band decided to strip down their sound and abandon the Jazz stylings of previous efforts, to rock out. The results left me cold, as tracks "Prepare Your Coffin" and "Gigantes" were the only redeeming qualities about the album, if not making it worth the cover price alone. Fast forward seven years, and after a very long wait, Tortoise release a new full length with very peculiar cover art, titled "The Catastrophist". The problem with long gaps between any band or musician's career, regarding album releases, is that expectations can be impossibly high. Upon first listen of "The Catastrophist", I can't say I was blown away, yet, unlike with "Beacons...", it made me want to listen again, and again. It's a far more subtle album, requiring a little more patience perhaps, but I found it gets better with repeated listens. The first two opening tracks are gorgeous excursions in instrumental post rock, reminiscent of some of their more dreamy, sublime moments. As for the two songs incorporating vocals, with lyrics, a first on an official Tortoise album, I was pleasantly surprised - they seriously nailed it with these songs, though I'm glad the lyrical stuff only comprised a small segment of the album. "Gescap" has a very repetitive Philip Glass-like sound to it, which, if you allow it, the effect can be very hypnotizing.Read more ›

I will keep listening to The Catastrophist hoping for a change of heart but based on the first two spins Im not impressed and yes I am a long time fan of Tortoise. I'll refrain from dissecting it for now until I have a more fully formed opinion.
