Digital yet sounds analog and works with real analog gear. Surprise, suprise!

This requires some ability to understand sound design using oscillators, filters and ADSR envelopes.I have seen it described as an introduction to analog style and as a stepping stone into a larger analog system. (modules can be arranged in a very individual way and range from 90 maybe 700 $ depending on what they do and who sells them. Roland has 4 effects modules out and are getting ready to sell analog modules as well.

This is a synth that is able to make deep bass sounds or satisfyingly high ones, it sounds very, very good. I already owned several analog synths to compare this digital unit to and can say that it fits in well. The effects are a bit simplistic but work very good. They help the sounds fit in a bit better. This has what Roland has called "plug out" technology, instead of just using a computer program the 1-m makes a virtual synth such as the SH 101 or PROMARS compusynth a basic part of it's internal design. The plug out devices are separate to purchase and well worth using if you do not have the actual decades old machines on hand. The 1-m can switch between a plugout and it's own synthesis with the touch of a button.

Many people have agreed that these old synthesizers sound very good when emulated by the 1-m. The CV controls are a bonus, clearly marked and they allow more flexibility when used with analog modules, the entire synth can be mounted in a eurorack system, or used as a tabletop or regular rack mounted machine. It has midi I/O on the top and the back as well as audio outs. A tear down review on youtube showed the massive computing power inside that allows Roland's amazing ability to sound very analog in spite of the digital origins.
