When the Viva Sol company says that their goal is to "take the time honored tradition of hand toss games to a higher level of artistry" they mean it. This is my third Viva Sol outdoor game and like the others, it is impressive. The wooden case is beautifully crafted with an interior that is fitted to hold the spikes and horseshoes for easy transportation via a thick, rope handle.
Yes, this is more expensive than other basic horseshoe sets but for anyone who appreciates quality craftsmanship and attention to detail, it is worth every penny and would make an excellent gift.
Combine this with other Viva Sol games to add a coordinated, sophisticated look to any large outdoor gathering.

I had never played horseshoes before, but I bought this set to use at our backyard wedding. We had all the Viva Sol games out during the reception for our friends and family to play with, and the horseshoes were a big hit.

The stakes were super easy to get set up and the horseshoes themselves were a good quality. My friends got into some heated competition trying to get a ringer (which is harder than it looks!).

With the portable carrying case, I can see us taking this set to the beach to play with our friends. The sand would make a great pit for the stakes.

Admittedly, I'm not a huge horseshoes fan, but anything that will get us outside is a plus in my book. Not to mention it's always nice to have something like this around for cookouts or get togethers with friends.

We are familiar with the Viva Sol company, and have been impressed with the quality of their products, so I didn't hesitate when it comes to this item.

Right away, I appreciated the quality. The carrying case is really quite lovely with the two tone wood and the sturdy rope handles. The latches seems a tad flimsy, but we've had no issues with them. The horseshoes themselves are just as pictured-2 mint green ones and 2 lighter blue ones. They are heavy and sturdy-which I supposes horseshoes are, right?! The stakes are just that-stakes you put into the ground. My husband pointed out that there isn't anything to help pound the stakes into the ground, but that's a minor point, and not a necessity in a kit like this in my opinion.

I sent my kids out to put the stakes into the ground-no problem there, and we gave it a shot.

And let me say-I am not good at this game! But as I said, it's more about doing something fun together, laughing and enjoying the company.

This set is well made and attractive-right along with what Viva Sol does. If you are looking to add to your arsenal of picnic/summer games-you need this set!

Heavy steel horseshoes, thick stainless steel stakes, and a heavy duty wooden carrying case. For playing horseshoes in our side yard and then carrying the set to the beach, this is perfect, and I could not imagine how to make a higher-quality set.

The 4 horseshoes are forged steel and come in two colors. The are appropriate size and weight to fit the official NHPA guidelines (which are included in the case). I would have wished for darker colors than the light blue and green which it comes in, but it is still a gorgeous set.

The stakes are shiny, heavy-duty stainless steel, tapered on one end for more easy insertion into the ground.

The box has a thick foam insert which has cut outs so the horseshoes and stakes fit securely. The box latches easily and has two heavy duty ropes to carry it. The set is quite heavy.

The set is a bit expensive, but when you feel how substantial and well made its contents are, it doesn't seem overpriced at all. This is not a kid's play set, but the kids love to play (just have to put the stakes closer). This is indeed a premium horseshoes game set. Highly recommended

I have played horseshoes many times during my life. I've even had horseshoe pits in the yard from time to time, but always removed them. It seems they go for quite awhile without playing and then are in the way.The Viva Sol set in a box looked like a good idea to me.
The steel posts are very nice and are pounded into the ground about 9-10 inches. Easy in and easy out. The whole set fits securely into the box and can then be put away when finished. Having the set available and easy to set up is the answer for me. I like playing them in a family or friend gathering and then remove them.
The horseshoes are just as they should be and have a good paint coating on them for longevity. They throw well and the posts are secure.
The set comes with directions to set up a permanent pit, but I find the portability of the set a very nice feature. As with other Viva Sol games, the box is great looking, strong and well designed. Everything fits securely without rattling around. This is a very nice set to either use as a permanent pit or to just use as you wish, at home, on the beach or elsewhere.

Everything about this set says quality. The horseshoes, the spikes and the box. Everything looks and feels like it will last forever.

The shoes themselves are the correct weight and are well balanced for throwing. I set it up in my back yard and we had fun. Setting it up in my backyard I could not just push the spikes into the ground, I needed to use a rubber mallet. It wasn’t too hard as the spikes are strong and had a good point. Clean up was easy and everything fits nicely back into the box.

As to being portable, I guess technically it is. Since I’m not a beach person I don’t know how hard it is to set up in sand. But from the other reviews, it seems easy enough. However when fully loaded with spikes and shoes, the box is heavy and I would not want to carry it very far. The box by itself is not that heavy but together it is. That should not be a determining factor whether or not to get this set.

If you like horseshoes already or just want to get started, this high quality set is for you.
