-Viva Sol Premium Hook and Ring Game-

This "lifestyle game" has a very nice wood panel with a quality finish (looks better in person than pictures).

This is such a simple but fun little game that is easy for anyone to get into. It's hard to resist playing once you see it beckoning.

Recommended for summer fun on a lazy day

Maybe I'm an idiot, but I am terrible at this game.
-
It's a hook and a ring and a string. You could buy all that for like $2.99 at Home Depot and make it yourself, or spend twenty bucks and buy this thing!
-
Don't get me wrong, it's cute. It has character. Kind of and old-timey feel to it. It would make a good gift for someone who has a deck with space and doesn't mind having this thing hanging around.
-
The directions are pretty vague. Hang the board up about 5 feet off the ground. Hang the string/ring about 6 feet away. No word on how long the string should be. So, who knows if I got it right? Maybe the measurements are off which is why I can't hook the stupid thing???
-
You need a ceiling - so a porch with no roof is no good. You need to hang the string/ring from your porch ceiling or basement ceiling (or wherever you hang this). Which means, even when you aren't using it, you have this ring just hanging around. Not pretty.
-
It's kind of fun, but again, I'm terrible at it and the directions could be better.

It has always interested me how the intermittent reward becomes far more compelling than a consistent one.

One of the hardest things here is getting my turn on this game. It’s ridiculous how easy it is to get addicted. They always say things like "You're too short," or "I think I smell something burning." Pfft. I haven't cooked in weeks.

This is a silly simple game. It is basically string, a hook, and a ring. One could set one of these up by screwing a hook in the wall and hanging the string with a ring on it from the ceiling. The teenagers have made several of them upstairs. The backboard is pretty, but not really necessary.

We set it up in an open gazebo and the only reason any one quits playing is because of mosquitoes. I was able to get my husband to come stand near me and watch but then he figured out that he was just mosquito bait and left (Suspicious man, that one).

Novel idea -- a non-digital toy or game these days! I would have given it 5 stars, but in fact, 35-bucks for such a thing, and another $5 for shipping make this too expensive for what it is. 2 stars off for being overpriced. Actually, this is a manufactured take on a very old game -- a version of which you could probably have found in the Middle Ages (or even back in the caveman days!), and for sure, on the midway at your county fair. Not so different than throwing rings over milk bottles (for those of you who remember what they were) or even darts at balloons.

It is a fine motor skill, hand-to-eye coordination challenge. These days, when everything seems to be pixels on screens, it's refreshing to see something real-world that requires practice to gain skill.

As many have said, you could make this yourself with a few things (hook, ring and some string) from a local hardware store. But how many of us would actually take the time? What makes this worth the 20-bucks is the fact that someone put it all together in an attractive way and packaged it up. The instructions are not written well -- not by someone with English as a first language, anyway. However, thankfully it's not that hard to figure out. Twist the hook into the board as indicated. Put a nail (or screw) in a wall (patio or basement probably, somewhere you can dangle the string-tied-ring from, so you can easily toss and retrieve it from your throwing point), and you're pretty much done.

The so-called "walnut finish" round wooden backdrop is actually a piece of nine or ten-layer plywood, scored and stained different colors on top. That alone took some money and work, and it is attractive. "Viva Sol" = long live the sun is a company in Indiana, but as usual, the product is made in China.

First, the preliminaries. There is assembly required. You have to screw the hook into the board. (That is easy and can be done by hand; there is a pre-drilled hole.) Then you have to tie the provided string around the ring and some part of the board. That, too, is easy. And then the board has to be mounted. There are two long screws provided for this purpose, buy you'll need your own screwdriver. Or you can use the small hook provided to hang the board from a nail.

Now, the play. The game is simple enough. The aim is to get the ring on the hook, a task that is far more difficult than it at first appears. The game is somewhat addictive, perhaps in part because of the difficulty. I won't rate the enjoyment level because that will depend too much on the individual. And I will note that it's easy enough to make your own version of the game at home if you're so inclined. But I enjoy it and think it's a pretty good thing to have in a place where people will be milling around. Ideas that come to mind are by the grill (where mine is), in the basement, and, of course, in children's rooms. My guess is that most people will enjoy this game as a momentary diversion--a matter of a few minutes--rather than a focus of activity.
