Originally I purchased a WD my cloud system, it worked okay but it doesn't go sleep sometimes.
After I had done some research, I've bought the Synology DS215J and it works quite well. The installation is easy. Well not easy as WD my cloud, I had to download the software at my PC then run the software from it. I expected the unit automatically fetches the software at the first installation.
It's got way more features than I imagined (I was NAS newbie) and there are lots of tweeak I can perform which I couldn't do in the my Cloud system.
Like what I did for the My Cloud, I've assigned the fixed IP address from router. I guess it's important if you want to implement the DDNS cloud.
My feeling is that someone who doesn't have intermediate computer knowledge/experience will face steep learning curve since its foundation is Linux. For example the permission and access config is tricky and more power than what you do in Win7.
Now I'm researching an UPS since the HDD may be corrupted if a sudden power drop occurs. Thankfully it supports numerous UPS so it should shut down elegantly when the power outage occurs.
Another good thing is that Synology provides smartphone app so I can check the status of the unit from my smartphone or ipad, not to mention viewing the contents.
Regarding the Data synch, I can do both;
1. I installed DS cloud at my PCes at multiple offices. My data are automatically updated in different pc. It's like dropbox at my own storage
2. I synched the data to Google drive so the data is backed up the Google in case my NAS is stolen or destroyed for any reason.

Overall I'm quite happy. Some reviews say it's a bit noisy, but I found it's quieter than the WD my cloud.

Synology for me was a simple fix for having the need to hook up my external home cameras with out buying a dedicated NVR for them. Two 1TB hard drives; each hard drive dedicated to a camera. If I'm away, I can pull up the screen shots from my cameras with my laptop, etc. through a secure VPN tunnel.
Another plus is that I can use it as a server, store my movies, tv shows, etc and have them to share with a family member that I set up to access the server.

Well, does the job but two stars as the unit had been used before (had gotten an IP address asigned to it). That should have been advertised.
The software is awesome though. Easy to setup and use with the apps.

Before you consider purchasing this product read the official "support" forum at http://forum.synology.com/ and try the “support chat”.

My experience had been negative. I have spent exponential more time than should be necessary to use this as a simple backup for my simple home network (two notebooks, two phones and a tablet). With the latest release of the software (there have been many!) tabs and functions seem to have disappeared, things that worked before now do not, and backing up a windows laptop is now a big issue. Anyway, don’t trust me, just check out the support forum for the real picture of what the customer experience is.

Try the on-line chat (try now before you buy), I never get a connection just “Please wait…”

If you create a support ticket, you will get a brief answer a day later but it probably will not help you.

I think the concept is good, they just can’t deliver. The software has issues and isn’t intuitive, which is all compounded by the lack of support.

I bought the DiskStation in Jul. Things were working great until today (mid-Dec).

Today I tried logging in the web admin and login failed with message that disk is full and to restart the unit.
I restarted it and now its status light is blinking yellow and there is this mini alarm sound every second or so.

I did have SSH enabled and after logging in, the volume1 directory is empty.
The support KB ( https://www.synology.com/en-us/knowledgebase/faq/379 ) mentions that if the If "the volume has crashed:
Do NOT touch or change anything in DSM and please submit a Support Form"
