I have both the Zeus and the Apollo, as well as a huge collection of regular dart, mega dart and disk blasters.

My impressions of the Apollo: This actually fires further (i.e. harder) than the battery-powered Zeus, unless the Zeus is using brand new batteries, in which case the range is much are the same. Ball ammo travels further and more accurately than any previous Nerf ammo, and I find the yellow balls easier to find in the nooks and crannies of my garden and yard. Ball ammo is definitely superior to dart or disk ammo. As another reviewer mentioned, the weight distribution and mold quality of the balls can vary, increasing inaccuracy, but nothing compared to darts even before they get bent or damaged. Balls do ricochet more, so be aware of where you expect them to bounce to as well as your target.

The spring, like all spring-powered Nerf blasters, is VERY loud when it fires, and gives quite a shake to the user. The blaster feels a little hollow and under-weight compared to the Zeus, and this box-like design may be magnifying the sound - or maybe it's muffling it.

The 7-round magazine loads very neatly inside the grip, just like most semi-automatic handguns. The grip however is very large to accommodate the magazine, feeling bulky even in my large adult male hands, though not uncomfortably so. Dropping a magazine while holding the blaster requires a second hand for me. The Zeus grip is more comfortable in my hands, but magazine switching is a lot more awkward.

You can't get 7-round magazines separately (yet?), so you have to go with the 12-round magazines as spares. These fit the same anyway, and level the playing field with the Zeus that can only use 12-round magazines.

I found this at a Wal-Mart today and I'm mostly impressed by the Nerf Apollo, but some design issues hold it back from five stars.

* First, the performance is fantastic. This blaster is super accurate and Nerf's claims of 100 feet per second are no joke. Shots are fast and precise. Shooting is satisfying, loud, and most importantly: fun. This blaster is the true competitive blaster that Nerf fans have been demanding.

* The Rival ball ammo is awesome. They do roll away, so you have to be careful about where you fire them, but you'll be able to pull off amazing ricochet shots with ease. They do curve to the left and right a bit after a certain distance, but not nearly as much as regular Elite darts do and you should still be able to hit a human-sized target from a good distance.

* The magazine's design is also awesome. You can scoop the ammo super efficiently by pressing the top magazine downward onto loose ammo. You can also manually unload the magazine very easily by pulling back the tab that holds the ammo in. All in all, a very efficient and practical magazine. The magazine is very fast and easy to load. Unlike the Retaliator, the priming handle does not need to be pulled back for you to be able to put the magazine in and pull it out, allowing for fast, efficient reloading.

* The shape of the gun is where I start to detract some points. It's not bad to hold and it does feel good in my hands, but the size of the blaster makes it feel like it should be a two-handed device, like the Retaliator with the barrel grip attached. That said, the gun is fairly light (although sturdy) and looks cool overall, so again, it's not bad, just sort of odd.

* The priming handle that you use to prime the blaster is another hangup I have with the Apollo's design.

Oh boy. I was looking forward to this product, and while it's far from perfect, it delivered in a lot of ways.

-The size. This thing is big! The rear portion is large enough to be comfortably used like a stock. The pistol grip is also pretty large to accommodate the magazines, and it's quite a nice change.

-The spring. This thing takes a good bit of heft to work the lever (positioning could be better), but it's mighty satisfying to rack this thing.

-The ranges and accuracy. The foam balls don't quite carry their velocity as well over ranges compared to the original darts, but they fly much straighter due to, A.) What looks like a bit of backspin applied, and, B.) No fishtailing from the awkward aerodynamics of elite darts sending them all over the place.

-The sound! It's like hitting a tennis ball with a metal pan! Equal parts intimidating and annoying as hell.

-The magazine. It works great! Easy to loud rounds into, easy to load and eject. Very simple, I doubt we'll see any changes to it.

Two negatives to note real quick though:

-Inconsistencies with weight on the foam balls are likely the reason behind some inconsistencies with accuracy. Hopefully Hasbro gets this sorted out, but at least they work well enough for now, and are still better than elite darts in that regard.

-A bit prone to jamming. No issues if you smoothly work the action, but the heavy spring and somewhat rigid gear system for the plunger make it tough to avoid.
