So after having the X850C for about a week now I have to say we are very pleased. Out of the box the Sharpness needed to be dialed down some. I ended up between 45-50. I use VIVID and tweaked some of the picture settings. There is also another key setting to keep a lookout for after you hit the HOME button. It's under Picture and Display after you tap Settings. Go to Dynamic Range. Pause your image and toggle between LIMITED and FULL. Depending on your source one will blow the other out of the water. Image looked a little cloudy but after changing it blacks looked great and the image was full of POP! Also for best results turn the Light a Sensor off.

Obviously you can tweak yourself to your personal taste. We are exceptionally happy with the clarity and motion. DirecTV looks good on all HD channels. Sports look terrific. Hockey you can keep up with the puck easily. Basketball the ball is not as blurry in the air. Football should be terrific as well. Can't wait to see the grass this season! Blu-Ray movies are like looking through a window. As for 3D we didn't mind it. We did pick up our own TDG 400A glasses from eBay. Movies looked pretty good with minimum to none crosstalk. As for streaming it looked very good. I was impressed! Google works reasonably well but internet features will depend on your signal. My TV has firmware updated twice. First one took a hour. Second one 25 minutes. Oh another cool feature we like is the Daydream Mode.

*Updated Jan 2016...

So, firstly I want to say that this TV is an excellent buy. I should know, it was one of 3 models that I had delivered to my home. However, there are some proprietary issues with the OS and screen which I noticed which forced me to opt for a Samsung JS8500 (which dropped to the same $1998 price point for last Black Friday). A comparison between those two is not necessarily fair; the JS8500 is a step up from the 850C (which is more akin to the JU7100 in Samsung's range), so I won't go there. However, I will give you the reasons for my return, before you read the rest of this review and make your own decision. I also speak about these issues with experience as I had a second 850C delivered to try and overcome them. The issues were prevalent on both models I had in my home.

Firstly the negatives:

THE ANDROID OS - looks great and 'should' operate brilliantly being Android, but is/was not ready for primetime. It would randomly turn itself off. Sound was out of sync (on my second 850C), I got random black flashing screens on some apps on both sets I had, and even worse on a few occasions I had a black screen appear every time I hit the remote which pulsed red and blue. The OS is also very laggy; often you'll think the remote has not been recognised and suddenly after your third touch it moves 3 x times. It's like our 3 yr old Roku stick it's so bad. I do not expect this of a $2k brand new TV.

Both sets I had exhibited VERTICAL BLACK BANDING to the right of the screen. The first was replaced for this reason and the second set was not as bad, but still evident.

VIEWING ANGLES are atrocious. I mean, the worst I've seen on any TV. Some would argue this is because it's a VA panel...

This is an excellent 'transitional' TV for Home Theater enthusiasts, and certainly a great buy for the average person in the street. But it is absolutely vital that a potential customer knows what he's buying into. The 850c has three major weaknesses, and they must be taken into account.

First, the VA panel on this TV is absolutely terrible for those people who want to sit at extreme side angles to the unit. If you sit beyond a foot to the side of a screen edge the image begins to fade, although when I sit about four feet to the side at 10 feet away the picture is still decent. Not great by any means, but decent. And so if you plan on extreme angle viewing, I would ask you to look it over very carefully in a video store.
Secondly, it does not have High Dynamic Range. This is certainly not a deal breaker for me, because even without it the Sony displays a truly wonderful picture. Finally, it's upscaling engine is so good that it can at times seem to be bad. When you're viewing a station with poor video quality, this 4k TV will make a bad picture seem to look much worse. (But this viewpoint is, ironically, a comparative one. A poor video source, such as Turner Classic Movies, actually looks better on the 850c than it did on my Panasonic plasma, but because stations such as Nat Geo Wild can look really good upscaled on the Sony, Turner looks much, much worse than it would otherwise.)

With these things going against it, it may seem strange that I gave the 65x850c a full five-star rating. I did so because this is, in my opinion, the best 'transitional' TV on the market right now.
