Got two of these things just a few days ago, and had some feedback on the start-up experience that I wanted to share. The enclosures were unable to spin up two of the three models of drive I tried in them. I'll probably keep them to use with the drives that worked, but that early experience was not exactly confidence-inspiring.

INSTALLATION
Installation is pretty straightforward, and largely covered by other reviewers. After removing the side of the enclosure, you have to slide the drive into the enclosure, then toward the back to seat into the SATA connector. The fit is tight enough that on multiple occasions I discovered I hadn't slid the drive into the enclosure all the way, so it would slide over the top of the SATA connector instead of seating into it. This can be a little hard to detect, as depending on the height of the drive the enclosure may still be able to close.

I also have an old Icy Dock MB664US-1SB USB 2.0/eSATA enclosure, which has a tool-less mechanism for seating the drives, and a couple of NAS boxes with trays. I prefer either of those approaches to what StarTech has done here -- the others seat the drive correctly every time.

DRIVE MODEL SUPPORT
Neither of my StarTech enclosures was able to spin up a Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 (31000340AS) -- the light came on, the fan came on, the drive did not. I saw a review somewhere that noted that some drives draw more current on start-up than the power supply is rated for. Checked the specs, indeed that drive requires 3A on startup, whereas the power supply included with the StarTech was rated at 2A.

Swapped the drive to the aforementioned Icy Dock enclosure (also with a 2A power supply) and it spun up fine.

I was pleasantly surprised when I put this USB 3.0 SATA 3 capable HDD Enclosure into service. I started with a new Samsung SpinPoint F3 1TB Sata 3 3.5" hard drive which slipped easily into place. Remove two screws to remove the case cover; no screws needed to mount the drive inside. It is all Very well thought out. Very solid. It is obvious that someone had put a lot of thought into this HDD case. They got it right.

The provided USB 3.0 cable was long enough for my needs and the power supply lead from the smallish power supply (wall wart) easily reached my somewhat distant electrical receptacle.

Although I have two USB 3.0 receptacles on my computer motherboard, both were already in use, so I connected this drive to this "add-in" USB 3.0 card sold here on Amazon.com: Plugable PCI Express to SuperSpeed USB 3.0 2-Port Expansion Card for Desktops (NEC/Renesas Chipset). I mention this just in case anyone is wondering how this unit will work with such an "add-on" card. I now know it works perfectly with this add-on 2 port USB 3.0 card.

After installing the new Samsung F3 1TB HD and connecting the power supply and the USB 3.0 cable, I switched the unit on using the large switch on the back of the enclosure. (There is a smaller fan switch too, it was already "on") My Win 7 Professional 64bit Operating System immediately and automatically installed the device driver for the enclosure but of course the HD did not yet show up as a drive. That was no surprise since the new Samsung had never been installed nor formatted on any computer yet. Otherwise, this next step with Device Manager would have not been needed ...

Works great, even as USB 2. (Haven't installed my USB 3 card yet)

However, when installing the drive in the enclosure, be very careful and make sure the drive is pushed all the way down in the enclosure (it's a tight fit) before you push it forward to couple it with the enclosure's sATA connectors. If you use too much force or the drive is not completely seated before coupling it with the connector, the plastic connector will break. Trust me. It should easily slide forward and mate as long as the drive is seated properly.

I dropped it a star because of that. They could have either built the internal connector a little sturdier or made it to where the drive doesn't fit as snugly so it would be easier to tell if it's seated completely.

Besides that, it works like a charm. The fan is silent as it's low RPM and you can barely feel any air movement but it's adequate for the job it's intended to do. The drive sits on a metal plate which acts as a heat sink which is a nice feature. Drive runs cool after 2 hours of running diags.

This is a very nice case for adding a drive to any modern computer. But, as my experience shows, using it with a USB 2.0 port on a computer should be definitely avoided - I am not sure why others are successful with this!

Originally, I was planning to use it with my son's 2.5+ year old iMac, that only has USB 2.0 ports. The Hitachi 2TB 3.5" drive installed easily inside this case but it would not work well at all. After trying other drives and other cables, the result was that it would still either not show-up at all on power-on or stop working after a few minutes.

I also tried it on my Lenovo laptop - which has USB 3.0 and USB 2.0 ports. With the USB 3.0 ports, it worked beautifully, but with the USB 2.0, I experienced the same problems as on my son's iMac. Same results on a third Lenovo laptop and a docking station - problems with their USB 2.0 ports.

And, finally, similar problems when it was used with a powered USB hub, although it did not manifest itself all the time - just when the drive was being heavily used, it would disappear from the OS lists.

Working with Startech support, we finally came to the conclusion that the case simply would not work well with a USB 2.0 port even though it is supposed to be backwards compatible. The explanation is that the power supply that comes with the case assumes that *some* power can (and will) be drawn from the USB port regardless of whether the power supply is used! To save cost in the wall wart supply, apparently - this is a poor design decision, as far as I am concerned.

This means that if the current draw on the USB port is too high, the computer may limit the current out the port and/or shut down the port if it wants too.
