I purchased this for my son for his 4th birthday. We are keeping it only because it would break his heart to send it back now. This is a total piece of crap. The pieces are so loose that it seems very fragile. When the ship is open, it doesn't really stay open. When its closed, it doesn't really stay closed. One side piece falls off every time you touch it, and it was like this right out of the box. I am really disappointed as we have invested a lot in the micro machine accessories that go with this ship, but based on the quality of this toy, I don't want to purchase the falcon or other play stages. I read the other reviews and thought to myself "we won't have the same issues" but I am kicking myself for buying it. Huge disappointment.

Based on the quality of this toy, I can only come to one of two conclusions (though I can't decide which would be worse): either Hasbro didn't pay test it at all or they did and decided screw the fact that they are terrible quality -- "the sheep will always buy." Because in all seriousness, the quality of this item is so poor as to be mind boggling. All plastic construction and terribly designed hinges on the "wings" means my six-year-old has to come to me every few minutes for me to put it back together (and of course, he thinks it is his fault and promises to be more careful, only to come back dejected when it again falls apart). Granted, $40 list might be to little for me to expect diecast metal, but could it at least not fall apart with even gentle play?!

On top of the poor construction, the design on this isn't much better. In transformer like fashion, the various pieces have to be swung just so in order to "close" the ship. Again, here this will require a lot of parental assistance (and won't be executable by any four year old I know and 99 year olds might like wise have a hard time). As other reviewers have noted, the stickers are likewise a pain and be ready to embrace frustration at assembly.

Some reviewers have given this high marks as a "collectors item." I can speak to that use, but as a toy, I wouldn't suggest doing anything with this other than tossing it into the nearest Death Star Trash Compactor.

There are those who buy Star Wars toys to collect, new in box, mint condition, never opened, sitting on the shelf. There are those who buy Star Wars toys to take them out and display, handle gently, and arrange it just so. There are those who will buy the Star Wars toys and manhandle them like they were meant to be played with. If you are in the last category, move along. This toy will not handle the rigors of childhood. Panels will snap off left and right, causing endless frustration. This star destroyer was not designed to do battle.

Count me in the second group. I like to open my Star Wars toys. After all, what's the point of buying a toy if it just sits in a box? On the other hand, I don't really play with them so much as rearranging them on the shelf. This is the toy for me. What I love about it is the attention to detail. I placed the figures and ship under a digital microscope to take photos and was amazed that something the size of the tip of my finger could have so much detail.

The ship itself did not require much assembly. Just place two pieces together. There was one sheet of stickers, but they are small stickers and it took me awhile to place them. I wish they would have put the stickers on for me, because I made some mistakes and can't get them on perfectly. There is one piece I think I need to superglue down, but I think it will be fine once I do that.

The ship opens up to look sort of like a set on a movie. A cannon unfolds and shoots one laser. There's a plastic rod that hangs an X-wing above the cannon, so I presume we should imagine that laser is coming from the X-wing. Great for displays. When the ship is closed, it holds all the small pieces except for the TIE fighter.

Speaking of small pieces, they are not metal like I expected. They are very pliable plastic. I love those pieces. When you see the detail, you will, too.

Story: I gave this to my son yesterday and this morning he comes down the stairs crying "My Star Destroyer keeps breaking and I want it not to. How can I stop it from breaking?"

The idea is good, but as I have seen several other reviewers say, it's a piece of crap. Save your money and buy something else. Of the two lateral pieces that flay out, one will not stay in place and needs to be used gently to stay. This is a kids toy! The top piece falls off all the time even if played with gently. I have no idea how a manufacturer could make this and think it was OK to have it be so flimsy! If you just want to fly the ship around on its own, you could do that, but then you would be better off buying something else.

Of course it comes with one Tie Fighter and 1 X-Wing and the potential to shoot down the Tie is there but it is difficult to do because the piece that does the shooting keeps breaking off! Also, the figures the come with this set are measured in millimeters not inches in my opinion to they are going to get lost easily. They are in one pose and are not posable.

The only thing could about this product is that it is a good idea and it is Star wars. My son thinks it's cool, but can't play without breaking so what good is it? More trouble than anything else.
