After buying an OtterBox Commuter for my 6s+, I've now had a chance to try both the Defender and this Symmetry model, as well as the Symmetry case for the regular 6s.

The Symmetry cases are nice because they're a single piece made of two kinds of plastic molded together. This gives them the benefit of a more protective rubber frame and internal structure, plus a harder plastic back that supports the whole thing. As a result they're the thinnest/smallest of the OtterBox cases that I've tried and the dual-material molding is a more advanced technology than their traditional multi-part cases. The back of the case is solid plastic with no opening over the Apple logo as their other cases have.

The Symmetry case has no flaps over the connectors, with openings for speaker, mic/headphone, lightning, and the silence switch. The up, down, and power buttons are covered by the rubber case which has raised rubber areas to push and requires slightly more force than the bare phone would.

Installation is pretty easy, just a matter of pressing the phone into the case. Getting it back out is a bit harder due to the rigid back of the case that makes it hard to bend away from a corner of the phone. All the OtterBox cases seem to like to hold on tightly to your phone so you really don't want to have to swap cases frequently.

No screen protector is included with the Symmetry cases (the Commuter comes with a very basic plastic stick-on protector and the Defender has a thicker plastic screen cover that's part of the case).

It fits the 6s+, and supposedly is newly designed for it, though it feels almost like this is still a 6+ cover that happens to squeeze in a 6s+ well enough.Read more ›

This is a great case in general. I love the protection provided by OtterBox with the slim design offered in this series. Here are the highlights of this case:

+ The buttons covers work great.
+ All the ports are easy to access for charging, headphones, and everything else. No fumbling with flaps and tight fits to get headphones in while driving.
+ There is plenty of grip in the hand without being so much that it sticks on the way into your pockets.
+ Plenty of space around the camera and flash to ensure proper functions of your iPhone.
+ Nice color selection -- I got the white and purple one for my wife.
+ The drop protection seems pretty solid (after a number of big falls!). Although this case is slim and sleek, there is a fairly thick rubberized rim around the edges of the phone to absorb the hard falls. Very good design as far as I can tell, and much better than competitors.
+ Super easy in-and-out if you want to use different cases, chargers, etc.

Now for the negatives (two things, really):

+ The price is very high, in my opinion too high. There are now so many decent phone cases in the $15-30 range that OtterBox must be feeling the pinch.
+ This case has no screen cover. I guess that's OK, as I really like the tempered glass ones you stick on, but it would be nice if a case of this price came with a tempered glass screen cover.

Besides the price and lack of screen cover, this is an excellent slim case that still offers great protection. Highly recommended.

The case fits the phone perfectly with no deformation or discernible edge gaps. While it was more difficult to insert the phone into than other cases I've used, I attribute this to the high quality of the case material used and the end fit is superb. The front perimeter of the case rises ever so slightly above the phone's face -- about 1/32" -- not a lot, but enough to protect the glass of the phone when resting face-down on a smooth surface.

One thing I especially liked about this Otterbox case was the subtle texturing of its edges. This gives the phone/case unit definite "grippability" when holding it, but without the pocket-clinging tendencies of rubber-edged cases. This is a big deal with iPhone 6's due to their already substantial size when being withdrawn from a pants pocket to take a call.

Another thing I like about this case is the size of the openings for the audio jack and the charger. These are generously-sized and I have no trouble inserting the slightly larger barrels of some aftermarket earbuds into the audio jack. Other cases' smaller jack openings sometimes prevent this with certain makes of 'buds.

The negatives of this case are few. The button blisters are stiff and require about twice the pressure of the phone's buttons to depress. Also, the silencing switch is rendered very difficult to flip due to the depth of the opening above it. One must have a decent fingernail to make contact with it. Again, these issues are both due to the quality and thickness of the case's material and are little more than petty annoyances outweighed by the knowledge that your $700 phone is safe and sound.

I really like this case. It feels good to hold and slips in and out of pockets with ease. I've gotten used to the pressure it takes to push the phone's buttons and I am confident that the case's material is strong enough to withstand a high degree of abuse.
