First - if you want to hear their music, just go to Youtube. This doc is instead insightful interviews with guys who were influencers on the LA scene, but for the most part didn't "make it" for one reason or another. There are a lot of parallels between the early '80s metal scene and New York's Broadway: everyone knows everyone, and there was as much camaraderie as competition among performers. I found it fascinating how many members of established bands jumped around trying to find the right sound, band chemistry, etc. These people obviously worked very hard to get exposure in the hopes of getting a tour and record deal. Also interesting were hearing about how big name performers "borrowed" gimmicks from lesser known players - specifically David Lee Roth and a few other notables. Its mind boggling to think about how all of these guys knew each other, borrowed each other's gear, sat in on other band rehearsals, etc.

I love documentaries, so I checked this one out. Lots of interviews, a lot of them with "would've beens" that discuss their so-called hey-days. No one you know, but they work real hard to describe how good they were and were part of the real stars you do know and their lives, lol! However, there's some good tid-bits to the point I gave three stars. There are REAL metal veterans such as Carlos Cavazo, it's essentially a documentary regarding those who started the hard rock/heavy metal scene on the strip in LA.

Too much of Lars talking and not enough of the others. I didn't finish it cause of this (got less than half way through and was done). Don't get me wrong, I love Metallica and grew up in the 80s but this should of been called, "Hanging out with Lars"

A very cool look into the early 80s on the Sunset Strip and the revolving doors in the bands around town. An insightful look into who made it and who didn't and still no answer to why. Some surprising stories and some cool appearances. A well done documentary about the LA scene just before the Hair Metal explosion.

The shooting was a little amateur and the sound was a little sketchy in places. And the story was absolutely incredible. For any fan of hard rock and metal in the 1970's and 1980's, this is a must see. This isn't about the groupies and the drugs and bad record deals and the excess that is so often told in music documentaries. This is the people who made the bands and wrote the music that we still love to hear. This is about the community they lived in, the places they played and the influences that made them get up on stage in dive bars and punk hang outs and do what we all wish we could have done. Block out an afternoon and watch the, both.

There have been a lot better documentaries that cover the time and genre. There are some great historical bits of information and some cool stories from those interviewed, but the production as a whole just okay.

I want to see the first one, but not going to pay for it. This was pretty good... shows how most of these rockers were doing it long before they broke. And to those who did not make it that far. They had some good memories albeit still competitive.
