The group Stuff was a collection of the finest session musicians in the New York studio music scene. Cornell Dupree[Guitar], Gordon Edwards[Bass], Steve Gadd[Drums], Chris Parker[Drums], the late Richard Tee[Keyboards] and the late Eric Gale[Guitar] were all A-1 studio musicians who played on records for hundreds of big name acts from the 60's, 70's and 80's. Their names appear on albums by Ray Charles, Grover Washington, George Harrison, Aretha Franklin, Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel, Joe Cocker, Tom Scott, Steely Dan, Quincy Jones and Van McCoy just to name a few. Stuff gained national attention on Saturday Night Live when backing Joe Cocker and John Belushi during their " Feelin Alright" duet back in 1976. This debut album showcases the progressive jazz/rock sound that they became famous for. The album is all instumental and upbeat with tunes like "Foots", "Happy Farms" and the Fantastic "How Long Will It Last" which features unbelievable guitar work by the grand champion of session guitarists Eric Gale. Stuff went on to record several albums after this great debut, but only a best of collection["The Right Stuff"] remains in print domestically. Import cd's to look for are "More Stuff", "Stuff It", "Live Stuff", "Live in New York" and "Made In America: A Tribute To Richard Tee". Also look for solo work by Cornell Dupree, Eric Gale, Steve Gadd[Gadd Gang], and Richard Tee. It,s great stuff?

Having read all he reviews above,I would like to add some NEWS and some comments ! First of all,the GREAT NEWS,which probably all have seen by now : As of July 15, STUFF:LIVE IN MONTREUX 1976 have been released, both as CD and DVD ! that is a miracle for a dedicated STUFF and RICHARD TEE disciple like myself ! awaiting the package from AMAZON containing both products.....what a thrill ! and the SNL season 2 1976-77 has also been released on DVD,containing the particular show mentioned above - hosted by Eric Idle with JOE COCKER and STUFF (in their own name) as musical guests....including the hilarious duet with Joe Cocker and John Belushi singing and getting spasms like Joe Cocker.
But - speaking of Joe Cocker : If You DO like STUFF,do whatever You can to get hold of the album, that brought them together : JOE COCKER : STINGRAY . They recorded it in 1976 in Jamaica (right before Stuff recorded their debut album) - and it is super STUFF ! it is very rare on CD - but it is pure gold...the best Joe Cocker ever,in my opinion !
I did an interview with Richard Tee in 1990,and he told me,how they recorded this during some weekends in Jamaica, but at the same time,he and Steve Gadd had to fly back and forth, because they were on tour with PAUL SIMON in the States in that same period ! but the result,my friends....look for STINGRAY with JOE COCKER,backed by STUFF....You will love it !!!

I first saw the group Stuff on Saturday Night Live in the late 1970's. I just fell in love with their sound. It's jazz and blues rolled into one sound. I use to sit at home and listen to this album when I was blue or needed a lift. It always picked up my spirits! I have been on more than a 15 year search to find this CD and replace my vinyl copy of this album. Stuff has one other album I am aware of "Live in New York". Of the two albums "Stuff" is the better album. The group: Cornell Dupree, guitar; Gordon Edwards, bass, percussion; Stephen Gadd, drums, percussion; Eric Gale, guitar; Christopher Parker, drums, percussion; and Richard Tee, piano, electric piano, organ.

What first hit me about this album was the advertising logo cover. When i got it in 1976 the vinyl copy was indeed one of the most colourful & striking standouts in the racks. The music contained is relaxed, harmless enough and doesn't require alot of concentration. In a way the album reminded me Will Boulewares "Crystal Green" project. This band was taking it back to basics and it was sort of refreshing because
at the time of issue alot of the jazz fusion records were pretentiously intricate, meandering and sometimes over processed. This band provided the other end of the scale i.e. what has become known as "smooth jazz".
The standout track for me has always been the first one. "Foots". Eric Gales intro is full of lightly swirling phaser,an effect that was popular in the mid 70s. It's hard to distinguish Gales playing from Cornell Duprees' as they swap solos as are very similar at times. "My Sweetness" is full of lush electric piano chords which fill you with eager anticipation as you await the arrival of a singer or soloist. However, it's abit of an anti-climax as nothing much occurs except for the very sweet tone of the keyboards. It's true that at times the tunes sound like chord sequences thrown together sporadically five mins before the session without any distinct melody line.
Stll nice enough for a summer evening.
