Assuming you already know why you want a keypad and are trying to choose the right one, skip to paragraph three.

First full disclosure, I have been an XBOX gamer since it first came out and was one of the first 20k accounts on Xbox Live! As it's been over a decade and I'm now 26 years old and married I've grown a little tired of the screaming 14 year olds and wanted a big change. I went PC. After years and years of xbox controller gaming with the majority of my collection being shooters like Halo and Call of Duty the transition to a mouse keyboard wasn't coming easily and I was seeking an alternative. Enter the Tartarus.

The Razer Tartarus (or any other gaming keypad for that matter) is essentially a mappable, half-keyboard with a more ergonomic design and maybe a couple added buttons. It appealed to me because it essentially places your hand on the correct keys and being new to PC gaming I was having a lot of trouble staying on the WASD keys, I also play on a low input lag high refresh rate 46in panel in my living room (console gamer habits die hard) so this gives me the opportunity to play on a lap desk sitting on my couch.

PARAGRAPH THREE, THE REVIEW:
The Tartarus looks the same as the Orbweaver but has fully backlit keys, not just the characters. The Tartarus uses membrane keys versus the more expensive mechanical alternative, by doing this it manages to be fairly affordable while retaining most the features of the more pricey Orbweaver. Other than the keys the differences are that the Tartarus has fewer keys than the Orbweaver. The Tartarus also has a couple features that the Orbweaver does not, it has a fully backlit keypad and a braided USB cord. Order arrived fast and in good condition, no problems whatsover.

Now onto the Tartarus. I use it for WoW, so I cannot say how it would perform for FPS or something else
At first it feld really weird. Had to redo some keybindings, but after 1-2 days it felt really really good. It's like they advertise, "you don't know how you played withouth it until you use it". You can put it on the rest of the chair and it feels ok.

And the reason for the 3 stars (and almost clicked 2 stars ...): Synapse
What a piece of sh**ty software! It just messes your key mappings middle of the game, with no other solution then alt-tabbing and manually switching back from the software. And it doesn't just happens every now and again, but constantly.

This alone is the reason I could not reccomend this to anybody who is seriously thinking of changing a keyboard for this. Crap software on a nice device.

3 stars and I'm being generous.

When I first tested this product out on League Of Legends, I was totally satisfied. The keys on the keypad are very clicky, giving it a nice touch. It also features a long, braided cable that will not tangle and is very hard to tear. There are 25 different programmable keys that can lead to a variety of commands when playing MMOs, RPGs, or FPSs. The ergonomic grip also reminds me of my own Razer Death Adder which makes it a lot more comfier when gaming on this keypad. Even though the price is a bit high for the product, it is still worth it in my opinion.

I've had the Razer Tartarus Gaming Keypad for a few weeks now and overall I'm very pleased with the purchase. My hands are large so the adjustable wrist support is essential for my comfort. At the moment I only play two PC games, Planetside 2 and SWTOR. It's great for FPS; the WSDA keys are easy to access and the default button layout is similar to most button configurations. I actually like the joystick even though the hitting the intended direction can take some getting used to.

The quality of the device is great and it seems durable enough to survive a fall from my desk.

The Tartarus hasn't completely replaced my keyboard for gaming, but for those long Double XP weekends, this thing is a wrist saving gift from the Tech Gods. If you are a serious gamer looking for some serious wrist support, buy this. You won't be disappointed.

Pros:
- The keys feel nice, not too smooth but not too hard, the tactile feedback is pretty good as well, I actually prefer this over the mechanical feedback.
- The backlighting is nice.
- The adjustable wrist is also nice (although I wish it had more like a thumb adjust such as on the orbweaver, but you get what you pay for).

Cons:
- Completely relies on Razer Synapse - I've had this crash, etc. in the middle of gaming, there goes my keybinds until it's back up!
- Wrist rest is pretty hard plastic, couldn't cost much to make that a little squishy...
- Really wish the 8-way directional pad was more like an analog joystick, it almost looks like it could be... but it's not even close - it's essentially 8 buttons that you can "click" the directional pad with.
- Bottom grip pads don't grip very well... I'm using mine straight on my desk (a cheap particle board/wood desk with a semi-matte finish, not slippery at all) and it slides all over while playing.
