Good deal!

The only problem was that the installation software didn't work on the latest Mac OS (Yosemite I think). The nice thing is that you can plug an Ethernet cable in to the printer and access it with a web browser from a computer on your network. Then you can enter you wireless information and use it wirelessly. In other words, you don't need the installation software. This is explained in the networking part of the manual. I think it's a great printer.

Fast but with some network quirkiness

Bought to replace a 5-year old workhorse 2170 that died after spending a few weeks on my 20 degree back porch. This one is fast. Faster than the 2170 to be sure. Odd, duplex is OFF by default. The other thing is although it installed fine using the supplied software and network discovery tools the desktop doesn't see it. I can print to it but the lag is 5-10 seconds and as often as not get a 'failed' message in my application. Even when it prints. Learned to ignore it. I mention it because I never had those issues with the 2170 despite the same computer, software, router, ... everything.
Bottom line: It works despite a few network quirks.

Almost Too Simple

Freaking amazing. We bought this to get us by until we can buy a new copy machine, i.e., master office printer. Hooked up an Ethernet cable then went to all of our Windows 10 machines and added the printer. Had to find the IP address using the Network through the first computer, but once I had that, went to the rest of the computers, added the correct TCP/IP port then let the printer wizard do its thing. We also use Windows XP virtual machines and I found it easier to use the included CD to add the drivers than attempting to use the WinXP printer driver finder. Prints come out looking cleaner than the HP color Laserjet 2605 I've been using - by that I mean the paper itself doesn't look like it's been lightly coated in toner going through the printer.

My only complaint is it takes a little work to disable the wireless portion if it is activated. We are wired only network for security reasons. There is no way to tell visually if the wireless is on or not nor a way to physically turn it off. According to the instructions, you must press and hold the Go button for 10 or more seconds, then it will print out the printer status and tell you if the wireless is on (active) or not (inactive). If you want to change the status, you must download BRAdmin Light from the Brother site then click on Device Home Page - I think there is a way to get to this without downloading the BRAdmin software, this is just how I stumbled through it. On the device webpage, click Network Configurations then click on the Wireless tab. Mine stated inactive so I didn't go any further, but the documentation seems well put together, so it shouldn't be hard to set up if you go that route. If you're prompted for a username and password, the default is admin and access, respectively.Read more ›

Great printer, but I'm mildly miffed

UPDATE: two stars removed. It's still a great printer, but I'm more than mildly miffed that I paid too much. Not only has the price on this unit dropped $20 since I bought it (in the space of 2 weeks), I could not use the wireless feature on this printer (I just hard wire it to my router and use wifi on the router to print from computers that are not hard wired to the router) and I discovered that the version without the wireless feature is less than half what I paid for this. Ugh. Like I said, still a great printer, but I paid too much. Which means paying just forty bucks for this is a truly amazing deal - skip the wireless feature on the printer, wire it to your router, and install the printer from the network.

ORIGINAL 5 STAR REVIEW: went without a printer for several years after switching from XP to Win 7 and my last laser printer didn't work on Win 7. But it's great to have a printer again even though I don't print much anymore - when you need to, it's there. This unit does double sided and the printouts look great. Only problem I had was when I printed a file that I didn't realize was automatically set to request the manual feed tray. The printer just turns on the error light and you have to figure out that means "feed me"! It's small, works great, and is reasonably quiet - I can sit next to it and talk on the phone without a problem.

I'm very satisfied. Nice job, Brother!

Good pricing, they seem to last about a year ...

Good pricing, they seem to last about a year and a half with high printing volume, using knockoff cartridges. That's pretty reasonable for 80ish bucks which is what I usually pick these up for.
