As the safety officer at a manufacturing facility, I have a lot of responsibilities that keep me on my toes and constantly on the lookout for anything which will help me to do my job efficiently and quickly. We use a lot of chemicals (liquid rubber, solvents, metal cleaners, everyday cleaning products) throughout all areas of the plant, and it is never hard to find a spray bottle or lab container with a label peeled off, worn away, or just plain missing. With that in mind, I decided to pick up these labels, but to be honest, I had few expectations that it would really solve any problems for me. In fact, I left them sitting and languishing on the edge of my desk, and had almost forgotten about them, when the coating process manager walked passed my desk and asked me what they were. I told him they were some fancy shmancy chemical label that I had happened across. He asked how they worked. I said, I'm not sure let's try them.
So, I loaded some labels in the local printer, went to the Avery website, pulled up a template for these labels, added the solvent name (MEK), added in the health, flammability and reactivity values, put "Safety First" in the text box and hit print. The website created a pdf file that I downloaded to my computer for future use (you can skip the download if you're in a hurry or don't plan to keep the file or just don't want to clutter your computer), and then it printed labels. The labels that printed out were crystal clear, with bold colors, and text with sharp edges. (See photo for comparison to our previous paper-based, handwritten labels, Avery on the left.)
