A very suspenseful and watch-able film about the corruption by war of a young boy, who kills his even younger compatriot in a fit of power.
Rock Hudson plays the adversarial but stabilising factor in this boys life after his accidental entry.

A dark and gritty World War II adventure movie filmed on location in Italy and co-produced by the Italians, this film is quite grimdark and violent, and also possibly one of the filthiest movies I've ever seen. Everyone is always sweating and in bad need of a good bath, with messy hair that needs combing, and clothes that need a trip through the washing machine. It all adds to the realism, of course; war is dirty and messy.

Hornets' Nest stars macho man Rock Hudson, fresh off his successful starring role in the big screen adaptation of Alistair MacLean's novel Ice Station Zebra, as the determined Captain Turner. He does a pretty good job in what is essentially a one-note tough guy role, although he does, later one, get to emote a bit during scenes where Turner wonders he's doing the right thing by arming a bunch of preteen and younger kids.

Other standout performances include the achingly beautiful Sylva Koscina as Bianca, whose compassionate, kindhearted nature make it truly saddening all that she endures throughout the film. She begins by denying the crimes of the Nazis, but eventually takes up arms against them herself. Still, there is the uncomfortable scene where she's almost raped by the kids, and roughed up by Turner later, and I really have to wonder what in the world directors Phil Karlson and Franco Cirino were thinking.

There's also Mark Colleano as Aldo, and wow, can that kid act! Colleano really plays the whole "psycho teen" angle to the hilt and makes Aldo a believably dangerous and reprehensible, but still somehow pitiable character. Indeed, almost all the actors playing the boys do a good job, particularly Mauro Gravina as the adorable, ill-fated Carlo, and John Fordyce as Dino.

This movie from 1970 or '75, can't see it that well, is not that bad at all. Rock Hudson leads a group of men to destroy a dam in Italy during WW2, The unit is killed except for him and he is gathered up by a bunch of Italian kids who saw their village taken over and families killed. They want the soldier to help them kill the Germans who killed their families. They get a German? doctor Sylvia Koscina (sounds Italian to me) to fix the soldier. The reason for 3 stars, Rock Hudson growls through the whole thing. Sylvia complains incessantly and is annoying. The lead Italian boy is on some power trip and just yells all the time and issues threats. if I were big Rock to this little kid (maybe 15yrs old) I'd clock him one. Overall, good story, good pace and the other boys all do an admirable job. Rock and Sylvia and the loud boy do too.

Forgotten little action gem with Rock Hudson in top form going on a dangerous WWII mission with a lovely Lady (Sylvia Koscina along to chaperone if you don't mind a tough as nails chaperone) and a bunch of kids (who hold their own against the adults and have a couple of standouts in their midst as well). This one is just different enough from the usual 'bang em up' war epic to keep your interest to the end. The kids provide some poignant moments but don't doubt for a moment that they're just as committed as Rock to accomplishing their mission. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised and really enjoy this excursion. You might even have a new respect for Rock himself since he is particularly good in this one (surely the dust has settled by now). As I recall he went all the way to Italy to make this because he knew a good script when he saw one..and he wasn't offered many at home.

Rock Hudson gets dropped behind German lines in Italy to wipe out the Nazis. He gets "captured" by a band of boys/resistance fighters led by a loud mouth kid who needs a good spanking. Gorgeous Sylva Koscina gets dragged into the plot to balance out Rock spending the whole film in a tank top I suppose. The whole thing is pretty ridiculous actually and not some 'gem' war film that I thought might be missing from my collection. If you like Rock (I do), and War films (I do, a lot), stick with him in "Tobruk" or "Ice Station Zebra". Hornet's Nest goes in the trash for my taste.

The movie takes place in and around a small Italian village in 1944. The video quality on the DVD is good, and the Audio is okay. As was generally done for America movies around 1970 everyone speaks English, even the Germans and Italians speaking among themselves. However, with the exception of Rock Hudson all of the main characters speak with an accent (although not necessarily the right one). There were a few lines I did not understand completely due to the accents and it would have been nice to have subtitles to gain a better understanding. Unfortunately the DVD does not have subtitles but I don't think I missed anything really important to the plot.

As I mentioned in my heading the movie contains extensive violence. The first six minutes of the movie has two massacres: one of everybody the SS found in the village; and the second of the American soldiers and Italian partisans who are caught in an ambush. There are two other major gun battles in the movie along with other shot-outs, fights, killings, and two explosions. However the movie does not show extensive blood nor graphic wounds etc. It does however show dead bodies lying around, but again without extensive blood or graphic wounds.

The movie has a strong drama lead by three strong characters. The first strong character is Capt. Turner (Rock Hudson) the American commander who lost his men and his Italian contacts in the ambush. Second to him is Aldo (Mark Colleano), the approximately 17-year-old borderline psycho leader of the rag tag group of orphans who survived the massacre at their village by hiding in the hills, and is now bent on revenge. The third strong character is Capt.
