[Prelude to War]
The WiFi airway in my neighborhood is heavily contested. My cable modem and wireless router are downstairs in the living room. My computer room is upstairs in the opposite corner of the house. Using the Wi-Fi Analyzer app, I can pick up at least one dozen WiFi networks from my neighbors, some are even stronger than my own network (see the screenshot I uploaded). That makes streaming video on my desktop computer painfully slow, especially since I always have multiple wireless devices connected to the same WiFi network.

[The War Plan]
Like any Warmonger, my first reaction is "I need a bigger gun". That means to get a more powerful WiFi router and blast all my neighbors' WiFi out of the water. But then I realized this will only lead to an escalation of Wireless War in which nobody can win. As Professor Hubert Farnsworth said, "Perfectly symmetrical violence never solved anything".

According to The Art Of War by Sun Tzu, "To win without fighting is the ultimate strategy". That's why I decided to invest in a power line network instead. This product (Netgear Powerline 500 with Wi-Fi - Essentials Edition (XWNB5221-100PAS)) seems ideally suited for my situation.

[The Land Campaign]
The Wired Connection part is easily done.

I am a network engineer with over 15 years experience in the field. This is one of the best Wi-Fi extender over power line that i have found. I always have friends and clients trying to extend wireless coverage. This was a very easy setup. One tip after installation - I have used these in many instances primarily to enhance wireless coverage to a smart TV. I found that on the smart TV and occasionally on iPads it will tend to try and connect to the original network with the weaker signal if you name the network the same. There are 2 ways to address this. Either use a different network name (SSID) than your existing network and connect the device manually to the new SSID OR if you want to use the same SSID then disconnect the device (for example on iPad you can use "forget this network" from the current wireless network and rediscover the SSID with the same name and the device (smart tv, laptop, tablet etc)will find the closer Wi-Fi signal. I only add this tip because almost every smart tv i have used these with they tend to try and lock in to the weaker wireless signal which defeats the purpose of extending the network :) This unit also has an added bonus of being able to connect a wired ethernet cable to verify wired connectivity or even use on devices that are not wireless capable.

I received this product for free as part of Netgear’s Friends and Family review program. My main use for this powerline adapter was to extend my wired network to connect a PS3. An added benefit was the extension of my wireless network to provide more solid coverage at the far end of my house.

Setting up the powerline adapter could not have been simpler. I just plugged in the base unit next to my router and the access point into a free outlet in the other room. There is a neat feature of these adapters that will let you know how good of a connection you are getting using your chosen outlet.

Setting up the wireless extension was also very simple. The first time I physically plugged my laptop into the access point and opened my browser, I was taken to the access point configuration page. I was given the option to either set up a new wireless network or just extend my existing network.

I did some limited bandwidth testing of the adapters using the PS3 network diagnostics tool. Before installing this adapter I would get an average of 4-6 Mbps down. Just extending my WiFi coverage using the access point increased my average download speed up to 14 Mbps. Physically plugging the PS3 into the wire line adapter raised my average download speed up to 20 Mbps.

Additionally, I was able to eliminate a WiFi deadzone at the very edge of my house. I went from 1-2 bars of WiFi strength on my phone to full strength.

The one thing that I wish was available was a pass through power outlet. The lack of a pass through power plug meant that I was running short on available outlets near my router and AV equipment. In the end, this was not a deal breaker for me.

Good:
- Easy to setup when using Netgear KB articles.
- Netgear Genie application found the powerline devices without issue.
- WiFi throughput speeds are the same as my home WiFi router.
- Ability to turn of the LED's (except the WiFi LED) of both units.
- Ability to enable power saving mode.
- WiFi and WPS can be disabled if not required.
- Hardware power switch on the powerline WiFi device.

Bad:
- Documentation from the included manual was hit or miss regarding some of the setup particularly local connection to the WebUI of the WiFi powerline device.

After configuring the devices with the Netgear Genie application from a connected PC, I was able to finally get a stable WiFi connection in a room on the far side of my house. When not connected to the WiFi powerline receiver, a visual LED on the unit will turn amber if it's in power saving mode. On authentication, the device will wake up and show a visual blue LED. Nice feature, and worked well. Speed tests performed comparing the throughput of the Netgear powerline WiFi against my home router resulted in the same speeds in my case.

Tips:
- Setup was easy for me with Netgear Genie application as you can configure both powerline devices from here.
- In the Netgear Genie application, right clicking on either of the powerline devices provides menu items.
- Configuration of the WiFi SSID and password to mirror the primary WiFi connection will provide seamless transition between devices both the primary router and this powerline WiFi device.
- There is a WebUI for the powerline WiFi device that allows trusted devices to be setup, nice feature if required.
