Full disclosure: I am a 40-year old gamer who started on a Commodore 64 (!). While I would not consider myself a ‘video game guru’, I’ve played many titles over the past 25+ years, to include quite a few CRPGs. The following is a humble evaluation of the game, a few hours in.

Family and professional imperatives prevent me from gaming much these days but I do occasionally treat myself to a title for the XBOX One; old habits (i.e. video gaming) die hard. This little gem of a title appeared on my radar a few weeks ago and, intrigued, I did a bit of research. Little did I know this game was first released on the PC last year, to great acclaim.

I understand this newest release, entitled Divinity Original Sin Enhanced Edition (DOSEE), developed by Larian Studios, brings a few improvements over its original version, to include both couch and online co-op, fully voiced NPCs, a fully rotational camera, graphical enhancements, and technical improvements. A few hours in (I hear the campaign can take around 60 hours to complete), I am genuinely impressed.

DOSEE is a lovingly crafted game, with great attention to detail, from graphics to quest design to dialogue. As the title of this review indicates, the game is nothing short of a thoughtful tribute to old school CRPGs, with a deep story, a healthy dose of character customization, and isometric turn-based combat.

In today’s market, dominated by what I summarily describe as ‘easily accessible’ games, the learning curve in DOSEE is steep by comparison. Very little hand-holding awaits you and, consequently, you should expect to spend a bit of time on the web digging for clues/hints, whether it touches on crafting, skill management, or quest sequence.

UPDATE (3/18/16): As I mentioned below, I would update this review if the developer released any patches for the game addressing the issues mentioned. There have been two patches released since this review, and judging strictly from patch notes a number of the more serious bugs, such as a few of the game-breaking ones mentioned below, have been corrected, and I have experienced no corrupted saves or crashes lately (it's a long game, we're still going!) but that's hardly proof of a fix and as far as I am able to tell most of the other issues still remain.

ORIGINAL REVIEW:
I love this game. Having spent nearly 100 hours on the original PC version with my girlfriend, I was excited when the PS4/XBONE versions were announced so I could play the game with my console-owning friends.

First, I must commend developer Larian for effectively porting a PC-oriented game to consoles. The UI has seen a big overhaul to be better displayed on large screens at a further distance, and the controller is mapped about as effectively as I could have imagined, without making compromises. If you were concerned about this version being dumbed-down for consoles, fear not; the whole PC version is here, but with the comparatively limited input options of console controllers compared to keyboard and mouse, it will take alot more button presses to perform simple tasks that could be executed with one or two quick presses/clicks on the PC. I was a bit disappointed by the lack of use of the touchpad for the PS4 version, which could have been utilized for at least a few quick commands, but the control scheme is overall well-done. For more details on the great features of this game, refer to the many superior 4 or 5 star reviews posted by other users.

I was estatic upon learning this game was being released on consoles, for I had been dying to play this game since first reading reviews for it for the P.C..(my laptop is old and can't run modern games). So far, I have not been disappointed. I'm a 37 year old gamer, and some of my all-time favorites are the Baldur's Gate and Icewindale series. Divinity: Original Sin is reminiscent of those games, just with modern twists. The story so far(I'm only 10 hours in) is interesting and the dialog and side quests are very clever. I never did play the P.C. version; thus, I cannot compare. For an Xbox One game, the graphics are fine. They are not anything spectacular, but images(1080p) are crisp, clean, and vibrant with a few muddy textures here and there. The frame rate is locked at 30 fps. I have not noticed any slowdown, so it's fine. -- The music is very good as are the sounds. The game just has a certain charm that many console RPGs lack. There are tons of skills to learn(you pick a class at the beginning for an initial base; however, you are free to customize and develop your characters as you wish as the game progresses), and there are lots of things to loot and intereact with.

--Battles are tactical, turn-based affairs (but much more involved and stimulating than JRPG turn-based battles). --The only flaw for me thus far is character creation is very limited. You can pick from several preset faces and hairstyles(plus hair color), and that's about it...no sliders to fine tune your hero's looks. Bah. Small complaint though. I am happy more CRPGs are making it to consoles. In general, they offer much more depth than console developed RPGs...I certainly hope this game does well enough to encourage more releases like it!
