I have replaced a lot of garage door openers in rental properties...
This is my first Chamberlain. No reason why, just not in the retail stores when I buy them.
I usually require one person to help remove the old unit and mount the new unit. So be careful, it can be awkward with one person.
Hard to explain the installation, as each install is different based on what u are replacing, or if its new, the type of mounts... but anyone with mechanical common sense and can read directions, or visit Chamberlains web site, should have no problems figuring out how to securely mount it.

the unit worked like a charm. Remotes coordinated first try. The range of the remotes is much better than other brands I have used in the past. The 1/2 hp is very strong, a big step up from the 1/3 hp that I replaced on this door. Of course all garage door weight should be counter balanced by the springs. Through time, the springs can wear, and the door can warp, creating some added friction, in which case, the door will be feel heavy to lift manually. If this is the case, be sure to have the spring tightened. Not all springs the same, so no simple explanation for this. The purpose of mentioning this is.... the value of a stronger motor is to overcome an unbalanced counter balanced system. But no motor will handle a system that is highly imbalanced...i.e. it will eventually burn out the motor. The more powerful the motor, the longer it will take to burn out...as most people don't check their garage door for spring tension. Use the Release pull, to disengage the opener, and simply lift the garage door up manually, it should feel close to weightless, if not, adjust your springs accordingly. Also, keep the tracks lubricated as this creates added frection and motor strain.

I also like the strong light that comes with this unit... stronger than most units I install...
highly recommended...

Right off, a disclaimer. I like screw drive garage door openers. I think they are quieter, smoother in operation, and require less (this is a very subjective statement, I admit) maintenance than chain drives.

But chain drive openers have their place. First, they are cheaper than screw drives (etc.). Second, there seems to be a sense that screw drives don't work well in areas with extreme temperature change (though what is meant by "extreme" is up for debate). Anyway, I live on the East Coast in the mid-Atlantic region, so "extreme temperature change" isn't really a factor. How far north (I assume that's what's meant) do you have to go before it is a problem? I've seen folks claim the Great Lakes region is too extreme, while others say just the opposite. So I guess I'm saying if you're interested in a screw drive garage door opener check with others in your area to see how they've fared.

Let's say then that you've settled on a chain drive. How's this one stack up? Not bad, I'd say. If you've had any experience installing a garage door opener you won't have any problem installing this one. You MAY, however, need hardware in addition/instead of the hardware supplied in the box (for instance, I had to purchase different hanging brackets to fit my application). Plan on at least a half day to get it installed, adjusted, and working (it took me almost a full day as I had some modifications to do to the garage so that the opener could be installed properly and to get the chain and "open"/"close" adjustment switches properly adjusted).

Compared to a screw drive opener, this is louder. But compared to other chain drive openers I've used it's reasonable (not exactly quiet, but not annoying either).

Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
I have just finished installing this unit a few hours ago and was able to do most of the job myself. I did need a bit of help with the railing but for the most part I did the job myself. I laid the contents of the box out on the garage floor, carefully read the instructions, didn't want to go back and do it again! For the most part it is not very complicated. I did have to make a run to the hardware store and buy material for the bracket that attaches to the ceiling and holds the motor unit.....that probably took the most time, getting the mounting bracket at the correct height and securing it to the ceiling beams. Fortunately there was an AC outlet pre-installed in the ceiling just for this purpose, I did have to run the sensor wiring myself, not a big deal, neither was it for the opener switch that I installed by the door into the house. I did use the neighbors help with the track or railing, once attached to the door it's fairly simple. Anyway after several hours with this project I was able to plug it in, and adjust the sensors which keep the door from closing on toys etc.(there is a video on the Chamberlain website, if you need help with this step). Had to make a few minor adjustments....and by now I had an audience. I did it! This opener works like a charm. The distance for the remote is good, opens way before I get to the driveway----then programmed it to the opener button that is built into my Jeep, that took two try's, but it works just fine.

This unit is quiet, at least more quiet than the neighbors and no longer do I get out of the car to open the door. Being able to do most of the job myself is really satisfying. I would think that anyone with a toolbox could do the job without much help if you just take the time to go over the instruction booklet before you start. I am extremely satisfied and based on my experience, would recommend this product to any do-it-yourselfer!
