VS is value series of Epson projectors. The EX series has a wider array of choices reaching into the additional models that give you a true 1080p or greater image. This new VS240 gives you 3000 color lumens, and 3000 lumens of white brightness. The comparable projector in the EX series gives you 3200 in each of those areas, a negligible difference. However the EX 3240 costs about 25% more than the VS value series. The 800 x 600 resolution is the same, and it has all of the same inputs. They are both SVGA 3LCD projectors. Like I said the only difference I can see is the additional 200 lumens of light.

The difference between 3000 lumens and only 800 lumens in some of the economy projectors is pretty great, but an only 200 lumens difference out of 3000, nah not a big deal. The EX does weigh 8.8 pounds and the VS only weighs 8.0 pounds. They both measure exactly 14.5 x 13.8 x 6.2 so the difference in weight although marginal can’t be due to size. Looks to me they are both in the same exact white plastic case, same exact button controls/features on top, with the only difference is that the VS has a black front name plate panel and the EX is white. Since the VS does not include a carrying case, and the EX 3240 does, I have to conclude that is the 8 tenth of a pound difference between the two. So as far as I can tell they are the same projector with a minor difference in lumens. However with the difference in lumens, at least some of the components have to be different.

A few notes about quality of picture etc. 800 x 600 resolution is good for projecting movies on the wall especially in darker rooms, but if you are planning to use this to surf the web, the resolution is such that smaller text like those found on desktop icons cannot be easily read.

At first glance, this new Epson VS240 appears to be an incredible value for money - you get the incredible Epson 3LCD projection technology (which means not having to deal with the drawbacks of DLP), a great compact form factor, HDMI and a hole host of other features. What you also get is SVGA - which means 800x640 resolution, and in this day and age that just isn't acceptable. Unless you are 100% sure you can get away with this low resolution, spend a little bit more and get one with higher resolution.

At SVGA, the resolution is just enough for some very basic computer connectivity or TV/video content that you can deal with in a resolution below HD. If all you ever do is some presenting in PowerPoint, make sure your text is larger than usual, so you'll prevent seeing jagged edges, or make the text entirely unreadable. On a screen around 110 inches, Excel sheets are barely readable without making the text much larger.

Aroubd $100-$150 more gets you a 720p projector, where the resolution is high enough for actual business work, or even for some entertainment, but keep in mind that none of the projectors in this series are really well suited for movies.

In operation, the projector is a real dream - relatively quiet, really bright, easy to setup and very quick warmup.

Got the projector out of the box, plugged it in to the wall, turned it on and hooked it up to my computer. Within a ten minutes of receiving it I had YouTube 15 ft wide on my wall.

Watched the Warriors/Spurs game on it with an HD Stream last night. It was beautiful.

Highly recommend this product based only on the first few days of owning it.

NOTE: This review was written by my husband Scott, who handles the more "technical" reviews for me.

The setup for the projector is pretty simple. I prefer using the included remote rather than the controls on the unit itself as they are more self-explanatory. This unit includes the VGA cord, but not an HDMI cable. There is also an extra little plastic piece that was in the package and was not listed on any contents or “what’s in the box” list. After skimming the manual, it turns out this is the holder for the optional wifi dongle that is not included. I am not sure why they include this and don’t mention it, it should just come with the optional dongle itself.

I tried the computer output using both a Chromebook and an HDMI connection, and a Windows laptop with the standard VGA connection. Using the recommended 800 x 600 resolution, the picture and text look very good. It is sharp and bright, even in a lighted room. Once you begin increasing the resolution, the text quality begins to suffer. It is still readable, but I wouldn’t recommend using at more than the basic resolution, which should suffice for powerpoint presentations.

I also tried the HDMI connection using an AppleTv. The text portions were not very clear, but the video picture was very good. This would be really good for watching movies or tv shows, and the sound came out of the unit itself. The sound was basic quality but good enough to watch a movie or show.

I wouldn’t call this unit portable, but it is fairly light for its size. The instant off feature is good if you are constantly moving from location to location, although the side of the unit does get a little warm even with the fan running. The fan noise is not too loud.
