According to some online resources, electrical muscle stimulation (EMS) has been garnering more and more attention as a genuinely effective way to build and strengthen muscle tissue. In particular, FDA approved devices, such as this Arms7 trainer by Slendertone, must meet a standard for effectiveness in actively building and training muscle tissue. Based on several uses over a period of about a week, I have to believe this device is as effective as claimed.

Setup of the Arms7 is simple, but that is not its only original and great feature. Unlike most EMS devices which require batteries, including the Slendertone ReVive S5, the Arms7 actually comes with a charger. You just plug the device in for about two hours to get enough power for (in my case) five days’ worth of treatments. Attach the gel pads to the cuffs (confusingly referred to as “garments” in the user’s manual), tighten the straps, plug in the device, and you’re ready to stimulate. The back cuff fits nicely over the triceps muscle, but depending on how buff (or not) you are, the bicep pad may or may not sit right on top of the bicep. (There was actually some noticeable difference in location from my right to left arms, presumably because I’m right handed.) There are only three programs to choose from, but the intensity of the programs can be varied from 0-99, and each arm band is adjusted individually. You can check the intensity and running length of the program by pressing the information button in the center of the device. This is a considerate feature, because as with the other Slendertone device, each program comes with a pre-determined length and you can’t change programs in mid-stream.Read more ›

I waited to review this until I used it for about a month. I had used a similar device many years ago during physical therapy and found it to be one of the few things that did any good. I wanted to try this to see if it could tone my arms and replace part of my strength training routine. The short answer is no, it can't. As other users have said, if you have flab, this gadget is not going to zap it away. Ii does make the muscles contract and feels pretty funky. That being said, I tend to think I get a better workout from using the free weights for my upper arm muscles. Not only that, but it doesn't take as long. This gadget takes 10 to 12 minutes. You can do an awful lot of reps with the free weights during that time period.

I think this could be used to supplement-- if you normally so strength training but for whatever reason have to mss a day or two, this can help keep you from losing ground, but it certainly is not a panacea and won't tone your muscles for you. You are still going to have to do some of the work.

This works great. I've finished two full weeks of sessions now and feel I can see an improvement.

Out of the box:
You have to put the gel stickies on the pads to allow the electric impulses to work. This is a bit cumbersome to place them originally, but then it's no big deal to cover them up with the included plastic covers when you are not using them. This is to ensure they stay clean, etc. I've also read that you can use certain tricks (alcohol, etc) to keep them sticky longer. Otherwise, when the pads stop being sticky and stop conducting the electric impulses they will have to be replaced.

I charged the battery originally and so far I haven't had to recharge it, so I'm still on the same charge. It is showing about a half charge now after 6 sessions. Which is pretty good in my opinion. I really figured after about 3 sessions it would be dead. So, I am very impressed with the battery life.

The Slendertone Arms7 has 3 programs - with the program 1 basically being conditioning and program 3 being the one you want to get to in order to tone your arms. Each program also has 99 levels of intensity. It's too soon for me to say, but 99 levels might be overkill. I'm on level 44 now. The only con I've found so far is the the size of the "one size fits all" cuffs. I have small arms and feel they are a bit big for me - yes you can adjust the cuff via the Velcro, but since the one strap on the one side is non adjustable, it can only be adjusted down so much. Therefore, an added adjustment on both sides might be more helpful for really small arms like mine.

Overall - it seems to be working and the power is very impressive and I love the fact that you can just charge the battery and not change them constantly. Also, the controller and cable is just long enough to use, but no so long it's constantly in the way. The design overall and functionality overall is very good. 5 stars - Marilyn

The Slendertone Arms7 Muscle Trainer is a muscle-exercising device that sends electrical impulses into your biceps and triceps in order to contract them at a rapid pace. The unit is rechargeable, and the user has the ability to increase or decrease the intensity of the electrical pulses with the remote device. The Slendertone comes with reusable gel pads that help conduct the electricity without causing pain; replacement pads can currently be purchased for about $15 a set.

This is modernization of a relatively old technology - the rechargeable batter in the remote unit replaces more traditional batteries or a wall plug, and the pads are far more stylish than in many similar devices. The technology DOES WORK, but whether it does a better job than traditional exercises and weights is something for the experts to discuss. I like my unit, and will continue to use it for the foreseeable future, though I'll probably use it less than recommended (directions want three times a week) and add in my more traditional weight routine.

For those wondering: the cuff is large enough to fit my relatively large arms due to the elastic connecting bands, and should work for most (but possibly not all) individuals.
