A couple weeks before my birthday I received a call from Desi Serna, author of Guitar Theory For Dummies. He wanted my address. It seemed I had won a PRS guitar in a drawing to promote the release of his book, which I had purchased. Seriously? I never win anything.

When the guitar arrived, I opened it to find a really solid, red, heavy canvas gig bag. Inside, sure enough, was a PRS Custom 24 SE Tobacco Burst. WOW! This guitar really looked special.

Looking closely I saw that the SE was very well detailed, without a mark, and every detail well done. The frets were polished and smooth as glass. The finish was amazing.

The letter with it from PRS suggested all adjustments be checked and gave the set up specs to go with. It all checked out.

Ok, let’s see what this guitar can do! I had just gotten a new Mogami Platinum cable. I use a Fender Custom Shop Vibrolux Reverb. A couple minor tweaks and it sounded pretty darn good.

The guitar came with a set of 9s. They sounded good to me. The pickups give a nice crisp, clean sound. I noticed the pickups seemed a bit closer together than many other guitars. I like this because the bridge is a bit deeper sounding. The tone control knob offers a nice single coil sound when lifted. Nice! Not quite like the sound of my strat or tele, but clean and clear.

I found nothing on this guitar that was overdone. Strings, settings, features, finish, even the tremolo bar is nicely finished and works smoothly without getting off tune. Amazing indeed!

After a week I decided to go through several sets of strings and look for my sound. I like Jazz and blues. I attend USM at Gorham University and study jazz. So a somewhat deeper and darker sound seems in order for my taste.Read more ›

I've owned two MD made PRS's in the past and I was pleasantly suprised at how much this guitar looks, feels, and sounds just like the higher end models. It's astonishing actually. The only thing SE about it is the "SE" logo on the headstock as far as I'm concerned. My only reget is not pruchasing the hardshell case, but that's because I've never been a gig bag fan. As far as gig bags go this one's just fine, but if you're browsing the packages online I'd spend the extra $$$ and gets the hardshell case.

So, bad stuff first, and it is tiny, the tobacco sunburst does NOT look much like the color you see in the image. The image appears to have been photo-shopped a bit, making the body look a lot darker that what it really is. The actual color is closer to a traditional sunburst, with a dark black ring framing the body and a brighter but not too bright yellow center.

That being said, I love this guitar. The neck is smooth and thing, making moving up and down the neck very smooth and easy. The pickups are great, producing a solid and clear sound. The gig bag that comes with isn't a cheap piece of garbage you get with most guitars. Catch this one on sale for under $800 and it will be the best $800 and less guitar you could ever own.

I've had this guitar for a while and it is everything I expected in a good way. Is it a high dollar PRS? ..no, it is what it is and it is freakin awesome. The tobacco finish is quite nice, the neck is silky smooth and the pups are excellent for classic/southern rock. Mine wa set up by the folks at SW and was ready to rock out of the box. I found no flaws with this guitar as it is very well made. If you are on the fence, go test drive one.

This guitar is really good for the money. Low action, no buzz or excessive action out of the box, almost in tune. 24 frets allow you to play any solo you want with ease. Pickups produce good sound, excellent tone, tremolo does not get guitar out of tune, everything is just working great. The bird fingerboard design might be confusing at first, but is easy to get used to. Generally awesome guitar in its price segment.

The PRS SE Custom 24 is simply phenomenal. I love the tone and its incredible versatility. The guitar itself is a no-brainer. What you do have to think about are the lackluster accessories. The picks and cables are fine, but the stand, strap, and hard case are pretty awful.

The stand is clearly meant for a smaller guitar, and if you put this guitar on it, it actually tips over. The fact that it's bundled with the PRS is quite ridiculous. The strap literally tore in two days of absolutely minimal usage, and I'm now quite worried about the integrity of the hard case, which for some reason has an unlockable lid that separates very easily.

If, as a last resort you need to buy a SE Custom 24, you can consider getting this bundle. However, I strongly suggest getting the guitar and accessories separately as this bundle is definitely not worth the money.

The guitar itself is fantastic! The price is also spot on, actually it's, kind of a deal. the guitar originally comes with a gig bag, a nice quality gig bag but still, it's a bag for what I've seen around $759.99 USD. in most major US music stores. What you are paying extra for is essentially the hard case which runs anywhere from $75.00 USD to $129.00 USD. for a generic one size fits most. And an official PRS hard case is gonna run you upwards around $179.99. So $800. USD isn't all that bad a deal. This is a picture of my SE 30th anniversary Custom 24 in Vintage Sunburst.
