How our Filters WorksPUR activated carbon filters are made from coconut shells, which are "heat treated" with steam. This produces pores within each grain of carbon, creating tiny tunnels and spaces, 1,000 square meters of surface area per gram of carbon. Pur's newest pitcher. A little bigger (by 1 cup) than the Brita competition, but also a little less functional. The expensive Pur filters are superior to Brita's, but work much more slowly. You likely want the Pur if you're more skeptical about your water, and the Brita if you're just moderately skeptical, or on a tighter budget, or drink a lot of water.
The details:
* Size: This slim design is higher-capacity (11 cup) than either Brita's slim pitcher (5 cup) or their larger pitchers (10 cup).
Pur wins if you keep the pitcher in the fridge, otherwise 1 cup isn't decisive.
* Filtering: The Pur filters are much bigger than the Brita's, and are rated more specifically for more contaminants. Some big differences: the Pur is rated for removing cysts, has been rated for removing pesticide traces, and for removing various metals that the Brita does not mention. The Pur also has a rating for reducing pharmaceutical traces (for which there's no established threshold, but I'd like as little of them in my water as possible).
Pur wins hands down on producing cleaner, safer water.
* Filters: Unlike the new Brita design, the Purs still need to be pre-soaked before rinsing and installation (similar to the old Brita design). The Pur filter doesn't have an easy-grasp top like the Brita, I've sometimes had to use tools to get a decent grip on the old filter I'm removing.
* Design: This Pur has a small fill opening designed to minimize the chance of contamination, similar to the nicer Britas. But unlike the Britas, the lid isn't fitted, so a casual upward motion will cause the lid to bounce up or even pop off. The handle is less comfortable than the Brita Monterey (see my pics), but better than the Brita Everyday.Read more ›
