I write this review partly as a public service. I see a lot of people are writing reviews saying that they are not audiophile. I thought maybe I could help shed some light on just how good the sound on these headphones is, because I definitely am an audiophile. No, I don't own vacuum tube pre-amps, or even a surround sound receiver. I don't have a power regulator hooked up to my refrigerator to keep it from putting distortion on the sound from my record player. But I HAVE received a ton of headphones good and bad (to the point where I often refer to myself as the "headphone king" these days. I love great headphones, and I'm not ashamed of it.

I came across this gaming headset when I visited my family yesterday. My sister (non-gamer) told me that she was shocked by the quality of this headset, and so was my father when they tested it out. Like me, they often get items like this for free in exchange for reviews. Being the resident headphone expert, I took one look at this set and said "No way. I don't want to touch them!" They looked expensive, and quite frankly, like a set of studio monitors that sell in the hundreds of dollars. I didn't want to tempt myself with something I couldn't afford. But of course eventually I couldn't resist and had to test them.. you know, for science!

OH MY GOD

Okay, I hooked these up to my iPhone and ran my usual battery of tests. I ran the Tron Legacy Overture, some pieces by the Prague Philharmonic, and then moved on to some classic rock, broadway pop, and the Interstellar, and Man of Steel soundtracks. First of all, these are the most comfortable headphones of this style I have ever encountered. They are incredibly soft and fit nicely over your ears and head.

~Highlights~
*****Excellent analog audio with PC ports
***** Sturdy Construction
***** Comfortable
***** Weak Audio with PS4 Controller (Gaming)
~~WOULD NOT RECOMMEND FOR PS4 GAMING~~

Excellent sound for an analog setup, but like others who have tried it plugged into a PS4 controller, it tends to be rather weak, requiring the audio on both the controller settings and the headset settings to be turned up to its peak level. As such, while I may prefer this for analog use with my laptop or desktop computers, I still prefer my Skullcandy PLYR1 7.1 Surround Sound Wireless Gaming Headset, White (SMPYFY-072) for use with my PS3 or PS4. Moreover, it has the 7.1 surround audio I prefer for movies and gaming. Analog just doesn't cut it anymore with regard to that. Now, were I to be able to afford the cleanest audio, treble, midrange, and bass, I'd go for planar magnetic audio, but since that runs thousands of dollars for a headset, and tens of thousands for a good set of speakers, that's just not going to happen. For those who like analog, these are ok, but there are many that can do better if you are using them with a PS4 controller, and today's digital technology can often outperform analog now in its ability to replicate surround sound and boost the drivers. What I can say, though, is that these are very comfortable, and the metal headband means you're not going to be replacing anything due to cracked plastic any time soon (unlike Turtle Beach Ear Force series headsets).

4 stars for PC audio, sturdy build, and comfort, but I cannot in good conscience give it 5 stars or recommend it to gamers using a PS4 or similar setup due to weakness when plugged into the controller, regardless of whether the controller is plugged into USB power or not.

I almost don't know how to begin this review. I test out headphones all the time; some good, some bad, most pretty much run-of-the-mill. We popped these out of the package and my Dad put them on to listen to music on his iPad while I worked on a project. About 60 seconds later he called me over. "Listen to this," he said, putting the headphones over my ears. The track, a Beatles song, sounded great. REALLY great. A little too great. These aren't super-expensive headphones. The sound quality, the balance, is stunning.

My brother, who is autistic and a rabid audiophile (and the self-proclaimed "Headphone King" because he reviews so many), came over and tried them. I expected him to nitpick and find some flaw that I wouldn't be able to perceive. Instead, he put them on, listened to a few tracks, took them off, and told me, "In my opinion, this is the finest piece of audio equipment you own, and would be wasted on gaming." AND HE IS A GAMER. Fellow Amazon shoppers, I don't what to tell you. The sound on this headset is ridiculously good. It makes no sense, given the price point. None of the boys in my house will use it for gaming--they just listen to music endlessly on it. The headset is so good I even listen to music on it, and I don't tend to listen to music just for fun. Music is background noise for me, not a pastime to be enjoyed for it's own sake, unless I'm at a concert. The sound is so good you will get a visceral reaction to some tracks, as if you were at the movies listening to surround sound (which, by the way, this set does not have built into the hardware. Doesn't matter. I know it matters, except here it won't, the sound is that good) from theater speakers.
