Not a bad unit but ended up leaving me wanting more. I was not very knowledgable about the helix 9 when I bought it. I expected the side imaging to not only show the fish but show their shadows to give a better idea of where there are in the water column. I see videos of the helix 10 on youtube doing just that but helix 9 won't do that because it doesn't come with the HD transducer that the helix 10 and 12 come with. Helix 9 is still a great unit and overall I was happy and recommend it but just was expecting the hd quality which it doesnt do or at least won't do without you buying the hd transducer for about $200 on amazon (I think the hd transducer is compatible with the helix 9 but not 100% sure) but ultimately I returned the 9 and went all out and bought the helix 12. Fish finders are one of those things if you aren't going to go all out and buy the biggest and baddest you probably should just buy a cheap one. I would recommend buying the helix 10 instead of helix 9. It is $500 extra but you arnt just paying for an extra 1 inch of screen; you are paying for the HD transducer too.
The pros to the helix 9 and humminbird brand is how easy and non threatening it is to use. Very easy to use and most the time you hit one of two buttons to switch between views. This easy to use design made me stick with humminbird.
