Evolution From Last Year's Norton Security w/Backup: CAN Be Used To Renew For Less! CATCHES Malware Well

Norton Security Premium is the next generation of Norton Security with Backup for 10 devices. The biggest changes for me is the branding on the box. To be sure there are incremental improvements. Norton Security Deluxe is like the older Norton Security for 5 devices. I think this isn't too bad. I like my security software to evolve and improve more than radically change.

Norton Security Premium comes with licensing for 10 devices: Windows, Mac, IOS (iPhone/iPad) and Android. This should be enough for many families but maybe not all. You do not get the same features on all devices. I have Windows and IOS so I'll share my experience with these.

The cloud backup is something use for non-sensitive information only as backup. The identity protection and contact sharing is interesting but are not features I choose to use.

Buying a new subscription is less expensive than renewing an existing one. This is a long pattern with Norton products and buying new can save quite a bit.

Windows Setup (UPDATED):
If you are using this to try to renew, DON'T follow the directions to activate the product at norton.com/setup. Instead login to your control panel and select renew. Select the option that lets you enter a key you already have (this one). Enter the key and if it is compatible with the version you are renewing this key will supersede the expiring key. One caution: wait till the old one is about to expire before plugging in the key so you don't lose your remaining subscription!Read more ›

Great value for unobtrusive protection

This 10-device key for Norton Security Premium is a super value for households with multiple devices.

Norton/Symantec tried to simplify their product lines this past year or so by eliminating Norton 360, Norton Internet Security, and various other products that made it hard for folks to choose the right package for their needs. All were replaced with "Norton Security" - which led to a lot of grumbling from many about lost features. As far as I can tell, all the features of the previous products are now included within Norton Security EXCEPT the tool that would clean up the Windows registry. That's still gone.

The initial simplification to a single product, "Norton Security", has now been made more complex by there being three versions of Norton Security: Standard, Deluxe and Premium. Review the image of the back of the box to see the feature differences (or go to the Norton web site). The Premium edition reviewed here covers Windows-based PC's, Macs and portable devices as well as offers 25GB of cloud storage for backups. Whether you need these additional features or not, the price per device for 10 activations makes this 10-device license very worthwhile.

I've been a Norton user for many years and find the impact on performance of having Norton to be extremely minimal (unlike some years ago). My only complaint is that Live Update consistently (and for years) says that it has just checked for updates, but if I run it manually, it finds a lot of updates to download and install. So, I don't trust the automatic updating and run Live Update myself at least once a week.

Installing on additional devices is a breeze as you can just log onto your Norton account and download the most up-to-date version there, obtaining a license.Read more ›

Solid protection but terribly flawed subscription management scheme

I'm a long-time faithful user of Norton products, as evidenced by the fifteen different subscriptions that show up in my Norton account. More on that later. For the most part, I've never had a problem with Norton products. I always opt to buy the retail version because it is far cheaper than their renewal pricing, even their "sale" or "special" pricing. I have yet to catch any malware while under Norton's watch although much of that is also in part due to common sense and experience gained from working in the IT field.

Last year, Norton decided to change to a new subscription model. Some aspects of it are great, such as the ability to finally protect a realistic number of devices affordably under one license. The three device limit was too limited even a decade ago, let alone now. With Norton premium, I can protect 10 devices for a realistic price. Considering the size of my family and the number of computing and mobile devices we use, even that isn't sufficient to cover every device but at least all of the most vulnerable devices like our PC's are covered.

It appears Norton has gone completely cloud based. I ordered the so-called retail package instead of the cloud version from Amazon. I was sent a box with a card inside that had an activation URL and a key code on it. That's it. Honestly, they should stop offering the retail version altogether if that's the case. At least ship the cards in envelopes or something else smaller than traditional sized software boxes large enough to hold a jewel-cased optical disk and instruction manual.
