I've been using the Quicken WillMaker Plus software since 2011. It has changed very little since that time, but each year (as with most popular software) it is updated and a new version is put on the market. Older versions came with a book from Nolo explaining various legal terms and information about living trusts. The current 2016 version offers online access to the living trust software for free for 1 year, but that implies a subscription thereafter, however the cost of that access is unclear.

I purchased this, the newest version, more as a curiosity than a need. Having used both the 2011 and 2013 versions - neither is supported by Nolo anymore thus current legal changes (which may or may not be the case for your state) don't show up on the forms in the software. There's no way to tell if your state will have any changes to specific forms for years to come, thus using older versions of this software is probably OK - but there's no real way to know.

This software can be installed via CD or by going to a download site (with the code in the box) and installing it following the download to your computer. Easy to do, and it automatically updates the software upon installation.

NOTE: If you need to re-install the program, you can again download it and re-input your activation code or use the CD. See photo for what comes in the box.

RE: OLDER VERSIONS

If you are considering saving money by purchasing and older version of this software, just be aware your state may have some forms that have been updated and those updates won't be visible to you if updates are not supported.

I purchased Willmaker for the first time in 2013 and used it to prepare advanced directives and wills for myself and my husband. Here in Texas we had to have them notarized with witnesses in attendance so my neighbors came over and a mobile notary came by to do her thing. For the cost of the software plus notary fee ($30) we both had everything in place in case something happened to either of us.

My husband had a massive stroke late in 2014 and was hospitalized so I provided the hospital a copy of his advanced directives which specified his wish to not be placed on a ventilator (which was what they planned to do had it not been for seeing his wishes in the advanced directive). My husband passed away and the will we prepared with this software had no problem at all in probate as everything was clearly specified and up to Texas legal standards. I'm so glad we used this software and had everything prepared.

This program isn't enough for complex estates, but for average families with uncomplicated family structures and financial dealings it will most likely be as good as anything an attorney would prepare (and charge a lot more for). Ours was uncomplicated and simply left everything to the survivor. If you want specific bequests to go to children or other relatives you can specify those options in this program as well of course.

I just finished preparing new will and documents since I'm now a widow and needed to change beneficiaries and the 2016 version is essentially just like doing it with the 2013 version. You don't need a bunch of legal knowledge to get through the program as it's kind of like TurboTax and has a question - answer format to help walk you through it. If you need fairly uncomplicated wills and medical directives this program is well worth trying.

This is an Intuit product and feels exactly like you’d expect an Intuit product to feel – assuming you’ve used one such as Quickbooks or Turbo Tax. The meat of the program is a series of questions which can branch to options as needed. I used it to make my Will and supporting documents such as my Living Will or Advanced Health Directive.

OK, first a bit of disclaimer. I am married and have no separate property so, assuming I predecease my wife, my Will is almost meaningless. Still, having one is a suspenders added to a belt keeping things just that much more sure. I also made provisions in case we die at the same time such as in a car crash. I work hard to avoid such an eventuality.

The program comes with a Nolo book which is referred to at points in the interview process. There is also online information from Nolo/Intuit and with the program registration, you get a year’s support / updates. Unlike dealing with a lawyer, you have to hunt around some to find your answers but then again, the online or book doesn’t charge $350 / hour either. Curiously, the program offers an option to Find a Lawyer at the end of each interview section. Good stuff if you are confused.

Despite the simplicity of my needs, the program wasn’t, as in the case of all Intuit products, configurable to my specific desires. I have a precise and simple wish when it comes to the disposal of my body. All I needed was a text box to enter those wishes but all I got were questions which were often yes / no or multiple choice forcing me to choose (for example) cremation or non-cremation, Since for me cremation isn’t relevant to my desires it had no purpose being in my documents. To edit this out, I will need to print to a PDF, convert the PDF to an editable format such as RTF and then edit.
