Interesting product to review because it hard to review without bringing in some of the iPad characteristics and the app that goes with it. First, the flash drive works well and I have had no problems with it. It seems well designed--it has a (covered) male Lightning port at one end and a (covered) male USB port at other end. On one flat side (not visible in the image) is a "money clip" fastener so you can clip it to your shirt pocket for the ultimate "I am a nerd" look.
To use the drive with an iDevice you must first download an app (iKlips) from the App store (its free) and install it on the device. When plugged into the iDevice, the app is activated and it provides the interface to the drive rather than using iOS directly. Don't know why Apple doesn't just make it possible to use a flash drive (or any external drive) with the iPad--it would be easier. When plugged into a USB port on MacBook, it operates like any other flash drive. The app allows you to set up folders for docs, photos, movies, songs, etc (some common ones are already enabled) and you can move files from iDevice to flash drive or you can load it up on the computer and upload to iDevice, or simply play on iDevice from the flash drive.
Dislikes: It is not really intuitive in its use--the steps you take to set it up and move files etc are not quite "Finder" but there is a tutorial available. I watched it a couple times and things work; it just isn't quite "logical" to me. Cost: $70+ for a 32 GB flash drive seems a bit high but there are few choices and this one works. I expect it will be cheaper in the future.
My uses: backup for images taken on iPhone while traveling until I can move them to a computer or permanent storage; (2) playing video files on iDevices when they are unavailable via wifi or they use up too much memory on the device.

Overall, so far, I like it and will continue to use it.

The iKlips Lightning USB thumb drive is a great (not new) idea but great design. The fact that I can drag and drop a movie from my network to this USB drive in it's native format and then just plug it in to my iPhone or iPad to watch without having to convert and go through iTunes to make it compatible to watch is just brilliant. The fact that it is on a small thumb drive and you can stream your video, photos or music from it is a plus. The app that comes with it is a pretty basic app that gets you the essentials of playing video, music or viewing photos. No album artwork or preview thumbnails or anything like that. Everything is presented in a traditional file list format.

The drive comes formatted out of the box using FAT32 file system format, which is good for about 75% of users who don't intend to stream any HD movies they might have, but if you have a file larger than 4GB (HD video, large backup file for your OS, etc) you will need to format/convert the drive to either NTFS or exFAT (I prefer the latter). What I have found out, however, is that even though you can copy/move larger files (4GB +), video files of this size will not stream (at least on an iPad 4), nor can I seem to move them on to my iPad 4 and play them. They do seem to play however on an iPhone 5s. Both devices are on the latest iOS (9.0.2 - as of this review). I also tried on two different iPad 4s with no success. The app is also in portrait mode only and landscape is not supported, so leads me to believe it was designed primarily with the iPhone/iPod in mind. Write speeds using USB 3.0 are around 55-60MB/s (when transferring from a 256GB SSD directly to the iKlips plugged into a USB 3.0 expansion card on the desktop.Read more ›

I purchased this to store my MP4 movie collection that could then be played directly on my Apple devices (iPhone 6Plus, iPad mini) without having to use WiFi. I purchased the 256G storage unit, reformatted it with the Disk Utility app on my MacPro laptop, so that I can now store files LARGER THAN 4G (some HD movie files are incredibly large), and this unit handles then with absolutely no problem!

After you have transferred your files to the device, download the iKlips app for your mobile device. Then, plug in the iKlips device to the iPhone or iPad, and follow the prompts. The app is simple and straight forward. I simply selected "movies", and it immediately displayed what I had put on the IKlip device. I store my movies in folders and sub-folders, by categories. The iKlips software on the iPhone and iPad mini recognized the folders and sub-folders. Each folder opened and showed the proper contents.

Movies have started playing immediately, with no lags such as when streaming by wifi. Remember, this storage device is a direct connect to your Apple device. When using this storage device to play a movie on my iPad mini, I can also activate my Apple TV and watch the movie on the large screen. I have had no problems with this device or the software that interfaces with it, and will be buying a second unit when I need to store more movies. One point you must understand, however. If you have purchased movies through iTunes, which are encoded, the device will store the movie, but you cannot play the movie directly from the device. The encryption must be removed and the movie converted to a format such as MP4, then it will play from the iKlips unit.
