I'm not a person of in-depth technical detail - like "how" stuff works but it can tell you that I was blown away by this little machine from the moment I plugged it in.

Set up was easy, plug the HDMI cable from your apple tv, roku, amazon fire and chromecast and put your sound source into your receiver (or not, it has pretty decent sound on its own) aim the picture, focus and sit back!

I had my Epson on the right side of the dresser and needed the picture to be on the opposite wall but on the left. Not sure it would work but thanks to this think called Vertical Keystone, the picture was placed perfectly on that wall -- it's baffling!

The picture OMG the picture. It was stunning. I had no idea how remarkable this technology had become. My wall is a darker cream color and the colors that came through were amazingly untouched. There are a few cool settings to help you make the picture clearer.

It does have a bit of fan noise but it's important because this guy gets hot!!

I'm gong to agree with M. Gondek's review of this item, (except I can't find a button on my remote that allows me to change from rear to front projection and upside down mounting modes).

But what I want to focus on here are the differences between the models, since that information is a bit hard to find.

When I search for this model, Amazon also suggests the following...So I'll save you some research.

Epson Home Cinema 730HD, HDMI, 3LCD, 3000 Lumens $499
Epson Home Cinema 740HD, HDMI, 3LCD, 3000 Lumens $599 <--THIS MODEL
Epson Home Cinema 1040, HDMI, 3LCD, 3000 Lumens $799

The 730HD is the earlier model of this projector. It has slightly higher! resolution (1280x800 instead of 1280x720). I figure they went to the 720 for the newer so the image could be 1:1 for a 720P image without any interpolation that could affect image quality. But I doubt the average person could see a difference. The other difference is that the 730 contrast ratio is 1:12,000 and the newer 740 is 1:15,000

Short story - for $200 LESS you could get a refurb 730 (or $100 less for new) and have virtually the same projector.

For $200 MORE you could have the 1080P version of this projector (1280x1200 interpolated to 1280x1080).
Is 1080P worth the extra money? Probably not. Unless you sit very close to your projection screen. Then you will notice a difference (the 1080p version also has a max image size of 300 inches vs 320 for the 720p versions if this matters to you)

Would I buy one of these epson projectors? YES! They are an amazing value for the price, well designed, clear menus, lots of options, and a nice picture. The question is which one fits your budget/needs the best. Hopefully this will be helpful as you choose.

This is one of those rare 5-star products - we love it so far.

1. Very easy set up. It's truly plug-and-play. We were watching the World Series in HD within a couple of minutes of opening the box.
2. Built-in speaker. It's not the best audio in the world, but very handy for quick set up, and enables this to be a useful office projector, too.
3. Colors are vibrant. We're projecting onto a gray wall, and the projected colors are still crisp and true. This was a big surprise, because our wall color is actually pretty saturated (it's the fourth level on the paint swatch).
4. Intuitive remote. Changing the aspect ratio, color pre-set, or pretty much anything else is easy, right out of the box. At first I was annoyed that the detailed manual wasn't printed, but we don't actually need it.
5. Multiple inputs. While it'll be easiest to use with HDMI into a receiver (there's only one HDMI input) so you can switch between, say, the XBox and the cable, there are also inputs for computer, USB, and MHL for tablets/phones (you'll need an MHL cable for the latter).
6. Crisp picture. We have this set up at just under 13 feet from the wall (96" diagonal picture), and HD broadcasts are remarkably crisp. While not as deep and saturated as a bigscreen TV, we're more than happy with the display (especially at this size).
7. Great color presets. We're leaving the color display on Bright Cinema, unless we want the truer blacks of Cinema, or are gaming (when we switch to Game). We haven't needed to tweak the pre-sets so far (and we're not sure what Dynamic is for - the picture doesn't look as good to us with that setting. Might have to break out the manual CD to figure that one out.)

This projector is close to perfect for my needs. It is easy to set up, easy to operate, projects a picture that is fine even in the day time, and stashes easily. That makes it nearly perfect for those of us who's living rooms are libraries rather than tv shrines. Our living room is pretty much wall-to-wall bookshelves. But, we do watch the occasional movie or binge-watch certain shows. This, plus a relatively cheap projection screen that stashes in a corner make our living room transform into a theater for those times. Keep in mind a few points:

1) The projector is 720p rather than 1080, so for the hardcore videophiles, the picture might not be quite what you want. For us, though, we still have most of our collection on DVDs. Remember those? Yeah, they look fine on this.

2) How long is your HDMI cord? Think about placement in your room. We put a blu-ray player on top of a bookshelf behind where we set up the screen. That works, but that leaves quite a distance between the blu-ray player itself and the projector. You can pick up a 25ft HDMI cable for pretty cheap, and you might want to.

3) Along the lines of 2, where is your sound going? If you plug the HDMI cable into the projector, that carries sound too, and there are some tiny and not very good speakers in the projector. If you want theater sound, you need the sound going into something else. That might mean more cables. Again, think about your physical arrangement in order to determine how many more cables you will need, and their appropriate length.

4) One of the nice features of the projector is the ability to adjust angles so that you don't need to keep the projector in one, pre-defined location. However, some of those angle-adjustment features reduce the picture size.Read more ›
