The Dell Inspiron i3656-8022RED Desktop is a mid level, mid priced system that nevertheless offers substantial hard drive storage and generous RAM. The biggest issue to ponder is probably the AMD Quad Core FX-8800p 2.1 GHz Processor. Although the top-line specs are impressive AMD processors in general have lagged behind Intel products for some time, and frequently make up for what they lack in core performance by adding cores or increasing clock speeds. The AMD Quad Core FX-8800p has real world performance that seemed to me, in a subjective way, not based on benchmarks, to be probably similar to a mid level Intel dual core i5. That's not a bad thing, those are pretty good processors to be compared to. But, I found the task crunching performance of the system to perform about like a good laptop, rather than a high end desktop machine.

The "laptop in a box" impression is reinforced by the relatively small form factor of this system. The CD/DVD drive is a laptop like unit, placed vertically rather than horizontally, that allows the case to be narrower than the usual needed for a 5.25 form factor drive. The form of the system is more like a very large vertical shoe-box than a full sized desktop case with multiple drive bays and so forth. One thing that is perplexing about the feature set on the Dell Inspiron i3656-8022 is the distribution of front and back USB ports. The unit has six USB ports, but only two of them are USB 3.0. For some reason the two USB 3.0 ports are on the front of the unit and the four USB 2.0 ports are on the back. This makes no sense, as one would think that USB 3.0 external devices, like back up hard drives, are the ones you might want to remain connected to the machine on a regular basis without cables poking out of the front of the unit.Read more ›

This review is for the machine configured with AMD FX, 16 GB RAM, 2 TB HDD. The computer is compact and not as big as traditional desktops used to be. It has a nice red outline to it, and a led light at the bottom when it's turned on. It comes with a standard keyboard and mouse (both wired), power cord. You just need to hook it up with a monitor and speakers if you need sound.

The performance is as expected from this configuration of a machine. Note that if you are used to using laptops with configuration like SSD and 8 GB RAM, this will seem slower to start and process. SSD makes a big difference. So don't compare with such fast laptops.

It comes installed with Windows 10, and you should update to latest available update. It did not have a lot of bloatware apart from an anti-virus program, and the typical utilities by Dell, Intel etc for various drivers. I like that. The graphics card has a HDMI out, DVI out, VGA out. There are lots of USB ports all around in front and back. The fan does not make too much of a noise, it's well ventilated and engineered.

I have not used desktops since a long time, and one advantage I am seeing of a desktop is, the study has become a computer room for work, for kids to do hw, and so on. We do not carry our laptops to the couch, able to focus better. if you are watching tv, watch tv, if you are having a conversation have conversation, dont carry laptop with you everywhere. I feel this is a hidden advantage of the desktop.

I did not face any issues with normal usage of internet programs, programming with visual studio, and any awkward performance issues owing to AMD and not Intel processor.

Dell customer service rocks, I have been a Dell customer for years. I have no doubts on relying on their support.

I have had extremely good luck with Dell laptops this past year. I have one on my desk that is for work purposes and one on the children’s desk that just gets a lot of abuse. It has to go places no mortal man would go, see things no… oh, sorry. I was curious to try out one of Dells desk tops. One of the best things about this computer is the 2 TB. That means that I don’t have to constantly slough things off onto a storage disk, and then try to remember where I put it.

Two surprises right out of the box: Size and an actual real life drive. I am surprised by how small this is. My husband has a Mac desktop that dominates his desk. This just takes up a small part of mine. I will probably move it under my desk shortly, but it has the whole novelty thing going on at the moment.

I was curious about this whole desktop thing. I have surely been spoiled by laptops and tablets. However, in some ways, they aren’t working for me anymore. Even my MacBook Pro is not fast enough. I can’t do enough different things without having to shut something down. But I rely on getting communications and being able to watch things for information. Then a laptop will crash and it will take me an hour to get it all set up again.

Like so many people, I have had trouble with Dells in the past. Then I had good and bad luck with HPs and Toshibas. None of the Dells I have received or purchased in the past two years has had a problem. I had a problem with a monitor that their cs, very friendly btw, couldn’t fix but then I figured out how to fix it. So it’s all good.
