This is my first vent mount cell phone holder as I'm accustomed to windshield mounts. I drive an F-150 that has very big, bulky vents. This device fits them just fine. During the winter I use my floor and defrost vents for heat as the dash vents can damage your phone if it gets too hot. My IPhone 6 with Otterbox easily fits the Joby Xl. Some people have stated that you can remove or insert your phone with one hand, while this is possible, for fear of damaging my vents I choose to use both hands. The spring mechanism appears very sturdy. So expensive, hence 4 star rating. Update- still enjoying this mount. For whatever it is worth I have gotten good at putting phone in with one hand. Very close to 5 stars.

I've been using this mount for about a month and a half now, and I'm quite happy with it.

The build quality is great, as you would expect from a Joby product. Everything is strong and feels durable, I never worry that I'm going to break or bend anything.

I'm quite fond of the phone grip portion. For a universal mount it's the most sleek and elegant implementation I've seen. I do wish that it gripped the phone just a bit tighter - I've never had any issue with the phone coming dislodged or sliding around, but a little more peace of mind would be nice. I suppose the flip side of that, though, is that it is quite easy to insert and remove the phone from the mount. I have a naked Nexus 5x, and it works wonderfully. There is plenty of room for larger phones, and I would suspect that there's also plenty of room for phones in cases.

I'm slightly less enthusiastic about the vent clip portion of the mount, though that's less a complaint about this particular vent clip and more a complaint against vent clips in general. By nature, this is not a particularly stable mounting solution, since the fins in the vent can move around. This particular clip is very well made, and I have no concerns about it falling off the fins in my 2014 4Runner.

The fact that the phone mount portion attaches with a standard Joby mounting apparatus has given me ideas about other ways to mount this, but so far I've been satisfied enough with the vent clip that I haven't spent the time or money to do something more clever.

All in all, it's not a perfect phone mount, but it is one of the best, most elegant and easy to use, that I have owned (and I've owned many).

I bought this for my iPhone 6+ so that I can mount this on my air conditioning vent in my truck. My Dodge Ram doesn't have a good location to place my phone so I can easily see it and so I started to look for some sort of holder. Did some research and since I've been buying some of the Joby stuff lately, I came across their Grip Tight Auto Vent Clip and decided to give it a go.

Pros:
-the orange clip part seems pretty sturdy and locked on tight to the vent
-the clip has a small ball (that Joby is known for) that you use to adjust the holder....it works really well. You can move the holder around and have your phone either sit up (portrait mode) or in the long way (landscape). I first tried to use it landscape but it blocked too much of my truck's radio screen. The holder can easily adjust to whatever mode you want and you can tighten and lock it in place with a locking ring.
-it does its job

Cons:
-while the phone stays put in the holder via the spring clips, it's not very solid. When using it in portrait mode, the clips holding the phone are on the sides, not on the bottom like it would be in landscape mode and so I'm worried about the phone slipping out. The case I'm using is asymmetrical which doesn't help though.
-the price....I paid $34 for this and it seems a bit too high for what you get in my opinion.

I'm going to keep it as it does what it's supposed to do. Only time will tell if the spring clips will lose their strength. I'm happy with it overall though!

clever little bit of usefulness- mounts securely to the A/C grill/vent and puts your phone right THERE! right where you (hardly) need it- this can be angled so it points towards the driver- I run "Torque" cuz I love dials,gauges and meters with redundant nearly-useless information. it also suffices for mundane phone function-the charger plugs in to my S6 without hinderance-works nicely! ( peeps be envious!) One thing leads to another- had to go out and get a Bluetooth OBD transmitting module and splitter cable in order to runTorque.. too much fun! having this Joby Gripper really did a good number for upgrading that little Chevy-

Not the best vent clip ever. It's a lot more obtrusive than most and is slightly awkward to shove your phone into with one hand (although it can be done). Because the dial locks and is on a ball joint, you really have to have it set up prior to being in the car. It comes with an extra part for sticking it in the back of seats on an airplane. Frankly, I'm not going to remember to pack that and it will end up just in the junk-electronic parts box.

There are cheaper ways to hold your phone in the car that are more minimalist and not 30$.

As phone holders go, this is a nice one. It holds the phone securely in its 'claws' (an iPhone 6) and the vent clip is snug and secure. Other vent clip phone holders we've tried in the past tended to slide off the vent slats unless we first adhered something with a grip to it to the slats (like moleskin or foam tape). Being a frequent traveler, the included bar for use on an airplane so I can watch a movie on my phone is a nice bonus. This might also work to secure the phone to the headrest so that kids in the backseat can watch something when they get tired and cranky from too long on the road. A front seat passenger could probably use this as well by securing the arm in the glove box door, but that might be too distracting for some drivers.

The clip itself is nicely padded so that it won't cause any damage to your vent, The portion that holds the phone is able to be positioned before turning the knob to tighten the phone holder in place at the angle you set it at. This keeps the phone from moving or jostling out of place while you're in a moving vehicle. It's also very minimalist. No extra or unnecessary pieces to make this too clunky. I was bummed that this will not hold an iPhone 6+ with or without its Otterbox case. It's just a hair too small to hold it when the arms are fully extended. I think I could force it to hold the phone, but that would likely cause damage to the internal spring. I checked out the product description, and Joby does offer another version that is specifically for larger phones like my 6+. I like this clip so much that I plan to order the other version. This clip IS pricey, but compared to the cheaper and more cheaply made versions that run around $20-$25 around here in stores, the ease of use and thoughtful design is worth the extra cost.Read more ›
