This is a review of the new Dell XPS 8900 with the new 6th Generation Core i7 (Skylake) chip. I purchased mine through Dell’s web site.

I was inclined to purchase a Dell because I’ve had good experiences with their desktops in the past. They have tended to be reliable and easy to upgrade. This desktop is replacing a Dell XPS 410 that has been running reliably for 9 years.

I wanted a reasonably fast desktop and when I compared the different XPS 8900 configurations, it seemed to be most economical to purchase a basic unit and then replace some of the components myself. That also gave me the flexibility to select the components that I wanted, as opposed to those available in a handful of configurations. It used to be that you could customize the computer the way you wanted it on Dell’s web site, but they aren’t very customizable any more.

I purchased a Dell XPS 8900 with a Core i7 (Skylake) chip, 8G of memory, a 1T hard disk, and an Nvidia GeForce GT 730 graphics card.

The computer can have up to 32G of memory (4 8G DDR4 2133 MHz memory sticks), so I replaced the memory at a cost of $170.

According to Dell’s web site, the computer has a 460 watt power supply that supports graphics cards that use 225 watts. So it can power a decent graphics card, but may not be able to handle some of the higher end cards. I replaced the GT 730 card with a GeForce GTX 750 Ti card for $124. I understand this is a good mid-level card.

Finally, the crown jewel was a 1T SSD – a Samsung 850 EVO, for $328. I don’t really understand why Dell doesn’t have the option of choosing an SSD (except for cache). I purchased the Dell X8900 to replace an older desktop. I needed one with a fast 6th generation Intel I7 quad core processor, good HD graphics, and ample memory, and storage. In addition to the typical web browsing, I use the desktop for concurrent applications, and HD video capture and editing. This X8900’s specs fit the bill. It comes with an Intel I7-6700 quad core processor clocked at 3.4ghz with turbo boost up to 4ghz, a 4gb Nvidia GTX 745 graphics card, 16gb of 2133mhz DDR4 memory, a 1TB 7200RPM hard drive, plenty of usb 3.0 ports, and a couple of extra drive bays for storage expansion. That is a lot of capability for the price point ($953 for me). It did come with the original Windows 10 installed so I had to go thru the latest version upgrade. The desktop description does tout the 460W power source providing an extra 225 watts for expansion, but more on that later.
Dell has some of the best system diagnostic tools that I have ever seen and recommends using them to periodically check system health. They will even check the health of attached external drives and other hardware (like a USB microphone). Overall I am very pleased with the quality and functionality of this desktop, except for –
The health and support application can send a user to a download page which contains driver downloads supposedly for the specific desktop. Each desktop is given a unique service code and the drivers can be refined for that desktop. Sounds good doesn’t it? Well it didn’t work out that way. I checked the driver download versions and dates and in each case, even if the version was the same, the date appeared to be later (or more current) in the download. So I downloaded the “newer” drivers, including bios. Big mistake.

I purchased the Core i5 version with the Geforce GTX 745 graphics card. I needed decent a computer and wanted to do some light occasional gaming so I didn't feel like I needed any better configuration than this right now. I've been using Mac computers since 2006 so this is my first time using or owning a PC in nearly 10 years. So far I've liked both Windows 10 & this computer but I definitely haven't missed driver issues/updates and worrying about malware.

I thought the x8900 case looks much better and smaller than expected in person. It features a super glossy black front with chrome trim around the edges. I have mixed feelings about the glossy finish as it is super prone to fingerprints and attracts lint. There is a multi-card reader at the top of the case with two hidden drive trays just beneath it(one occupied by the DVD R/W Drive). There are two USB ports on the front of the case. There is a small tray on the top of the case that is ideal for smartphones and other small devices. There are 2 angled USB ports and audio in & out ports. There are 2 more USB 2.0 ports on the back in addition to 4 USB 3.0 ports. There are 6 audio ports for 7.1 surround speakers. The graphics card has an HDMI/MHL port, DVI Port, and a VGA port.

There is a decent wired chiclet style keyboard and a multi dpi laser mouse included in the box. Both items are decent for what they are. The mouse has a good amount of weight. I hate the super glossy finish on the mouse as it has almost permanent fingerprints on it already. I actually don’t mind the keyboard and find that I can type extremely fast on it. It also has a numpad which I appreciate after using a Bluetooth keyboard without number pad on a Mac.

I haven't had it long but from what I've experienced so far it performs extremely well.Read more ›
